Academic Books

Reuse of material from IET academic books in other publications

The IET is committed to Open Research principles, and in this spirit we have signed up to the STM Permissions Guidelines, a cross-industry initiative that allows the reuse of limited amounts of material from our books in other original published works with a minimum of effort needed for permissions clearance.

You may reuse limited amounts of original material from our books in other print and electronic publications (including subsequent editions by the same publisher) without charge, provided that:

  • your publication must consist of at least 70% newly commissioned, original, previously unpublished material;
  • you may not use more than:
    • 3 figures/tables/images and 400 words from an individual book chapter;
    • 5 figures/tables/images and 800 words from a single book;
  • you do not edit figures in a way that alters their meaning; and
  • you must provide a citation to the book as the source of the material. For the citation text click on "Export Citations" on the chapter's page on IET Digital Library.

As long as these conditions are met, you do not need to ask our permission.

If your requirements do not meet these conditions then please contact us at Books at the IET.

Note that:

  • this policy applies only to original material in our books. For material that has another original source, please contact the copyright holder identified in the figure/table/image caption.
  • your publisher may ask to see proof or licence of permission to reuse our material. A print-out of this page should suffice, but if not they can contact us at Books at the IET.
  • the STM Guidelines apply only to reuse in publications published by other signatories. However we have voluntarily extended our policy to all publishers. To read more about the STM Permissions Guidelines visit the STM website.
  • this policy applies to IET academic books only. For our Practitioner products (including Technical Regulations and IET Standards publications) please contact IET Standards Enquiries.
