Temperature dependence of resonant frequency in optically excited diaphragms

Silicon diaphragms of 4 μm thickness, fabricated by anisotropic etching techniques, are coated with a thin layer of aluminium. An intensity-modulated laser beam focused on the diaphragm generates transverse vibrations which are detected interferometrically. The measured deflections, resonant frequencies and temperature dependence of resonant frequencies are reported.

SAW dispersive delay line utilising apodised IDT with periodic electrodes

In designing SAW dispersive delay lines (DDLs), one usually applies dispersive interdigital transducers with electrode spacing varying according to the frequency-delay time relation of the delay line impulse response. A new method is proposed in the letter, in which a DDL is treated as a bandpass filter with a nonlinear phase response. Such a filter can be synthesised with an IDT having periodic electrodes with apodisation. The experimental result is −40 dB of sidelobe level obtained in a system of two DDLs, one of which is Hamming-weighted.

All-fibre SAW sensor with frequency tuning capability

A new sensor for detecting surface acoustic waves (SAWs) is presented. The system uses single-mode optical fibres throughout, and requires only one 3 dB directional coupler. The sensor is tunable to acoustic frequencies above 8 MHz. The new system can be realised in a particularly compact form, and could form the basis of a miniature instrument.
