Dual-bus metropolitan area networks (MANs) are well suited to provide broad-band network access and network interconnection over a city area by functioning as distributed broadband multiplexers between existing corporate/public networks, multi-media terminals, and broadband integrated services' digital networks employing an asynchronous transfer mode. The authors address the important problem of integrating time-sensitive and non-time-sensitive traffic over MANs. In the proposed integration scheme, time-sensitive variable bit-rate isochronous (VBRI) traffic, such as voice and video, is statistically multiplexed over the MAN by a novel, reservation-arbitrated (RA) access protocol, while non-time-sensitive asynchronous traffic, such as data, is transported over the residual bandwidth by queue-arbitrated access. RA access allows a VBRI traffic source to capture and reserve some isochronous channels on a bandwidth-on-demand basis. Compared to previously proposed reservation protocols, RA access is fair, provides a better isochronous transport service, and is compatible to the slot format of the existing IEEE 802.6 MAN standard. The system performance is analysed by an approximate theoretical model and computer simulations. Results indicate that the proposed integration scheme can be engineered to meet the stringent quality of service requirements of the time-sensitive VBRI traffic, while providing a satisfactory service to the non-time-sensitive data traffic and ensuring efficient bandwidth utilisation.
The optimal multimedia multicast routing problem is to determine a multicast tree of minimal cost to connect a given source node to a given set of destination nodes while fulfilling the delay requirement for multimedia information. This problem has been shown to be NP-complete (Kompella et al., 1993), and hence fast and good heuristic algorithms must be used in practice for a reasonable network size. The authors derive a lower bound on the cost of the optimal multicast trees by Lagrangean relaxation and problem decomposition. The numerical results for some standard test problems demonstrate that the lower bound is very tight and differs from the optimal solutions by only a few percent on average. In addition, the lower bound can be computed quite quickly and the computation time on a SUN workstation is only a few minutes for the networks with 100 nodes. This tight lower bound can be used to evaluate whether any given heuristic algorithm for multimedia multicast routing is close-to-optimal.
The advantages of using hysteresial techniques in flow control mechanisms are demonstrated. The work scenario consists of a server transmitting video information to a group of clients. To avoid overflow or underflow in the buffer, the client sends control messages (feedbacks) to the server which order adjustments to the transmission rate. Hysteresial techniques allow the minimisation of this signalling traffic, even when there are rapid fluctuations in the buffer occupation.
The authors propose a low complexity scheme for generating multiple bit-streams, each optimised for a different display resolution, from a single bit-stream stored in the image retrieval database. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the single bit-stream case significantly in terms of progression speed and bit-stream size.
