SnO2 and TiO2 coatings toward decreasing the surface temperature of solar cells

Transparent SnO2 and TiO2 coatings are developed in a binder network consisting of 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane (H2N-(CH2)3-Si-(OC2H5)3) and methyltrimethoxy silane (SiCH3-(OCH3)3) with ratio 1:1. The formulation method was cost-effective, produces good transparency, clear and managed to dry at room temperature. The coating mixtures were applied onto the acrylic sheets by using sponges and they were sent for structural and thermal characterizations. The Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) topography showed that the both particles are well-dispersed and in good agreement with the binder system. Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDX) study confirmed that both metal oxide particles managed to blend well into the mesoporous network of the coating solution in separate events. In a thermal study by using thermocouples, TiO2 coating gave an excellent result for thermal-decreasing ability with a decrease in surface temperature of solar cell by 10°C from the uncoated solar cell after approximately one hour. However, the thermal characterization showed a negative result against the solar cell with SnO2 coating as there is a rise in the surface temperature of solar cell which is more than the one with uncoated sheet. Overall, TiO2 coating showed positive results for both structural and thermal characterizations while SnO2 coating possesses good structural properties but poor thermal-decreasing ability for solar cells.
