This article examines the opportunities and challenges of cloud-based BIM, such as cloud computing technology, its interactions with the structure of the internet, the server farm and the importance of IP addresses. How the diffuse project model works with regard to diffuse information, people and technology is also considered. The article further examines how the business cloud will affect BIM, having substantially altered the financial landscape; the requirement for organisations to provide security for their cloud for users and ensure that it is protected from and by its workforce; and the need for private and public clouds to be examined for their usefulness and how they affect the bottom line for many company stakeholders. The current legal landscape is studied to see what current measures are in place and how they must evolve to keep up with the consequences of BIM in the cloud. The article finishes by looking at the risk of hacking and the darker elements of cloud-based BIM.
