Near-surface sea currents are important for scientific and economic reasons, but in the past have been difficult to measure reliably. A moored instrument technique is described which provides measurements of current at predetermined depths between 1 and 2 metres; the data are both recorded in situ and telemetered via the Argos satellite-based system. Some preliminary results are presented which include comparisons with other near-surface instruments and the newly emergent HF radar backscatter technique.

Small, essentially vertical antennas over a highly-conducting ground plane are studied both experimentally and theoretically. The range of dimensions dealt with (including image) is between one-sixth and one-third of a wavelength. Of all possible cases, those studied are limited to configurations with no ground connection other than at the feeding terminal. It is found that by adding extra wires to the basic ‘inverted-L’ antenna one can increase both the input impedance and the bandwidth.

The application of artificial intelligence (Al) techniques to improve spectral estimation techniques is examined in the restricted environment of biomedical analysis. In many cases the fast Fourier transform (FFT) periodogram is applied because it is simple to use and it provides an unambiguous output. There are a variety of parametric spectral analysis algorithms which can improve upon the periodogram results, but they usually require certain critical initial parameters to be accurately specified. This is typically done by trial and error with the user successively analysing his results and repeating the process with revised parameters.The use of a Prolog rule based expert system is investigated to determine the correct autoregressive (AR) model order. This is achieved by searching for a region of stability in the outputs of AR estimators and through comparison with the FFT based periodogram. This provides spurious peak compensation capabilities and subsequently permits the peaks to be located and assigned a confidence level by the artificial intelligence (Al) system. Our application is restricted initially to estimating the fundamental content of a fetal heart signal, which is a harmonic process where the signal is stationary only over short (32 sample) data records. We further report an Al algorithm to estimate and track the fundamental frequency of real fetal signals over 32 and 64 point data records with AR filter orders up to 30 which permits the analysis of up to 1 5 simultaneous sinusoids.

A computer model has been developed in parallel with an experimental study to determine the performance of two offset frequency selective subreflectors, consisting of arrays of concentric rings laid on ABS and expanded polystyrene formers. Radiation patterns in the reflection and transmission modes are compared with those for flat surfaces with the same edge profile, and in reflection with metallic surfaces. The curvature of the subreflectors was small, but still had a noticeable effect on the linear crosspolar patterns in transmission.

Some properties of the Transitional Butterworth—Chebyshev (TBC) filters are studied and a simple design method to obtain such filters is given. For a magnitude specification, the order of the transitional filter obtained will be the same as that of, or at most one higher than that of, the corresponding Chebyshev filter. In addition, the linearity of the phase response is improved.

It is well known that the design of nonrecursive digital filters of the lowpass, symmetric bandpass and highpass types using the window function approach is simple and quite easy to implement. It has already been shown that the I0-sinh family of window functions gives designers flexibility because of its adjustable parameter. In this paper, two other well-known window function families, namely the I1-cosh and raised-cosine types, which have variable parameters to control the ripple, are considered. Expressions are derived for filter order in terms of ripple magnitude and transition band-width. The performance of these two families are compared with the modified zeroth-order Bessel (I0-sinh.) family and the results in the time and frequency domains are presented.

A new reduced-search minimum distance decoding algorithm for binary block codes is proposed. The time taken in searching for the nearest code word is reduced when all code words are grouped into classes and then each class into subclasses. The first classification is performed using the code weight distribution whilst the second (or subclass) level uses the weight distribution in some N-coordinates. The order of search is determined from statistical data based on the weight of the received vector and channel statistics.
