The authors illustrate how EM simulators can be combined with fuzzy logic techniques to develop an efficient approach for designing microwave circuits. They demonstrate the approach by considering the design of a microstrip coupler, a microstrip 6-pole filter and an HTS microstrip 3-pole filter. The fuzzy logic system (FLS) is constructed using data pairs generated from an EM simulator. The FLS is employed as a design tool to directly synthesise the coupler and the filter physical dimensions for a required RF response. The results achieved demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach.

Channel characterisation is an essential step to the development of outdoor or indoor wireless networks. Indeed, for multimedia applications, new radio mobile systems must accurately take into account channel behaviour. An efficient 2-D ray-tracing method is proposed to characterise the narrowband and wideband radio channels for a very large number of receivers in microcellular configurations. It is based on a quick precalculation of an exact 2-D visibility graph. The proposed method follows an ITU recommendation, which advocates, for wideband characterisation, consideration only of the paths included in a 18-dB dynamic range of power impulse response. Contrary to the classical approach, which consists of thresholding the complete impulse response in a post-treatment, this method only computes the significant paths. The interest of the proposed method resides in its significant computation time reduction factor, in comparison with the classical approach, without any significant loss in accuracy. Received power and wideband parameter maps are computed for about 40 000 receivers in a dense urban environment, and are provided with an approximate reduction factor of four and 80% of the null estimation error in comparison to a classical approach.

A synthesis of double-ring slot antenna with tree-shaped coupling strip for 2.4/5 GHz dual broadband applications is presented in this paper. Based on analytical equations, the inner circular disc depicts the operation range of 2.18–2.70 GHz (21.3%) and two concentric slot rings with split-mode couplings determine the desired bands of 4.93–5.96 GHz (18.9%). A novel tree-shaped coupling strip with branches to couple the inner circular disc and with leaves to couple the double-ring slot respectively is proposed to enhance the response of dual bands simultaneously. The obtained frequency responses cover the required bands of IEEE 802.11b/g (2.4–2.484 GHz) and IEEE 802.11a (5.15–5.95 GHz) for WLAN applications. Simulation and experimental results with frequency responses, radiation patterns and Poyting vector distributions are presented and discussed.

The paper presents a complete portfolio of RF and baseband components by adopting RFCMOS technology for single-chip systems. Using optimised CMOS topology and deep n-well, the performance relates to the ft of 60 GHz and fmax of 53 GHz at 10 mA, an ft of 70 GHz and fmax of 58 GHz at maximum-transconductance bias, and a minimum noise figure of 1.5 dB without ground-shielded signal pad. High quality-factor inductors are obtained using thick copper interconnects; the measurement result demonstrates the corresponding quality factor of 18 at 1.7 nH. The MIM capacitors, as well as accumulation-mode MOS and junction varactors are also optimised for improving quality factor. For the purpose of eliminating inter-block coupling noise penetrating through the substrate, a deep n-well isolation and a p-well guard-ring have been adopted to suppress the substrate noise by 25 dB and 10 dB, respectively.

‘Frequency scaling’ relates to the variation of propagation effects as a function of frequency. The frequency scaling ratio between the Ka and V bands, derived using a model based on an integrated parameter such as rain rate, is inadequate. In fact, propagation variations due to the microphysical characteristics of rain need to be considered in order to improve the existing scaling model, particularly at higher frequencies. Many different laws for raindrop size distribution, combined with one year of measured drop size distribution (DSD), are used to study propagation sensitivity to drop size and shape. A statistical study of the normalised DSD has been carried out, and two scaling models are proposed in which microphysical considerations are taken into account. Italsat and Olympus data have been used to validate this approach.
