A variable-speed drive using a doubly salient variable reluctance motor, because of its ability to operate efficiently from unidirectional winding currents, enables the number of main switching devices in the inverter to be halved, yielding a very economical brushless drive. The drive is analysed using a linear model for the motor, yielding phase-current waveforms which enable an economical design for the thyristor inverter and provide guidance for a motor design which will optimise the performance/cost ratio of the drive as a whole. A control strategy for firing and turning off the inverter thyristors at appropriate rotor angles for a traction application also emerges from the analysis. Experimental waveforms exhibit shapes similar to those predicted, and the results of this analysis have been of great value in designing such a drive for a battery vehicle.

The paper describes a control system for 4-quadrant operation of induction motors with characteristics suitable for crane hoist duty. The control system is based on a combination of stator-voltage control and rotor chopping. A thyristor stator-voltage regulator is used to provide a means of motor-speed closed-loop control. The regulator automatically reverses the phase rotation for plug braking or provides d.c. to the stator for injection braking as determined by load conditions. The rotor chopper operates with a duty cycle that is a predetermined function of rotor speed. Analysis of the chopper action in the rotor is used to determine the optimum function required to develop the maximum possible torque per stator ampere over the operating speed range. Different control functions are found to be necessary for motoring and d.c.-injection modes of operation. Analysis of the system and experimental results are presented showing successful 4-quadrant operation.

This paper describes the design and construction of the control circuits of a naturally commutated current-source inverter feeding a synchronous motor to give a variable-speed drive. The main contributions of the paper deal with the circuits required to control the inverter from rotor position, and to control the system for all modes of operation including regenerative braking. The performance of a prototype is illustrated by test results and recordings.

The mathematically exact solution for the steady-state line-line short circuit of the basic synchronous generator is developed from first principles and extended to include the effects of saliency and dampers. The analysis is applicable to steady-state line-line loading and also to the performance of the single-phase machine. The solution is checked by comparison with the numerical step-by-step solution and supported by a series of test results. It enables the effects of the damper windings to be investigated in what is probably their simplest form. Although the full solution is necessary for line-line loading, it is found that in the particular case of steady short circuit the effects of resistance are negligible even for a small machine; simple formulas are deveoped for the armature and field currents and the line voltage.

Test results are presented for a novel form of heteropolar linear synchronous machine. The results show that the machine is capable of providing both thrust and lift force at relatively high efficiencies and power factors.A simple control scheme is described that enables independent variation of lift and thrust to be made. This is accomplished by the use of ‘constant-current’ supplies and operation at a fixed torque angle of 90°.Design formulas are derived, and performance predictions obtained from them are shown to agree well with the test results.
