In recent years nanotechnology has become increasingly important in almost every field. The new and improved physical, chemical and biological properties of material at nanoscale have far reaching implications in the fields of science and technology. Nanoparticles’ effect on various plant species must be investigated to develop a comprehensive toxicity profile for nanoparticles. The current study strives to evaluate the effects of nine types of metal nanoparticles including monometallic and bimetallic alloy nanoparticles [Ag, Au, Cu, AgCu (1:3), AgCu (3:1), AuCu (1:3), AuCu (3:1), AgAu (1:3), AgAu (3:1)] on seed germination, root and shoot growth and biochemical profile of Silybum marianum plant. Seed germination was greatly affected and increased significantly upon treatment with nanoparticles’ suspensions and was recorded highest for Ag nanoparticle suspension. Metal nanoparticles also had a significant effect on the biochemical profile of S. marianum. For the first week, the effect on DPPH, total phenolics content, total flavonoids content, total protein content, peroxidase activity and superoxide dismutase activity was enhanced, but declined as the time progressed. Among the nanoparticles being used, the effect of Ag nanoparticle was mostly enhancing. The results obtained are significant in mapping the effects of different monometallic and bimetallic nanoparticles on medicinal plant species.

Present study utilised textile soil isolated bacterium Pseudomonas stutzeri to synthesise extracellular silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) under optimised conditions. The synthesised AgNPs were characterised using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Optimisation showed AgNPs synthesis within 8 h using 2mM Ag nitrate at pH9, temperature 80°C and maximum absorbance toward 400 nm. TEM analysis revealed spherical shape AgNPs and reduction in size upto 8 nm was observed under optimised conditions. FTIR spectra confirmed presence of proteins bound to AgNPs act as reducing agent. AgNPs showed strong antibacterial activity against multi-drug resistant (MDR) Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae as demonstrated by disc diffusion and colony forming unit assays. Zone of inhibition increased with increasing concentration of AgNPs with maximum of 19 mm against E. coli and 17 mm against K. pneumoniae at concentration of 2 μg/disc. Furthermore, AgNPs did not show any cytotoxic effects on human epithelial cells as demonstrated by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide assay even at 2 μg/ml concentration of AgNPs. The results of the present study suggest that AgNPs can be synthesised rapidly under optimised conditions and show strong antimicrobial property against MDR pathogens without having toxicity effect on human epithelial cells.

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are thoroughly purified and dispersed in an aqueous solution of high molecular weight poly-L-lysine (pLlys). Human intestinal epithelial Caco-2/TC7 cells are incubated with the SWCNT dispersions in pLlys, and their effects on cell viability are studied by image flow cytometry. No significant changes are observed in the cell culture wells up to pLlys concentrations of 10 μg ml⁻¹. However, high mortality is detected at pLlys concentrations of 100 μg ml⁻¹. The presence of oxygen-free SWCNTs does not modify the effects of pLlys on cell cultures at any of the tested concentrations (≤1 μg ml⁻¹). In addition, SWCNTs having an 8 wt.% of surface oxygen are tested with identical results. Thus, purified SWCNTs, even bearing oxygen functional groups, act as inert particles in the cell culture medium. This result supports the applicability of SWCNTs as carriers in pharmacological formulations against digestive tract diseases.

Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using plant extracts has been achieved by eco-friendly reducing and capping agents. The present study was conducted to evaluate the larvicidal efficacies of AgNPs synthesized using aqueous leaf extracts of Excoecaria agallocha against dengue vector, Aedes aegypti. The 3^rd and 4^th instar larvae of A. aegypti were exposed to various concentrations of aqueous extracts of E. agallocha, synthesized AgNPs and also crude solvent extracts (methanol and chloroform) for 24 h. The formation of AgNPs using aqueous leaf extracts was observed after 30 min with a characteristic colour change. The results recorded from UV-Vis spectrum, XRD, FTIR, EDX, SEM and HR-TEM were used to characterize and confirm the biosynthesis of AgNPs. The highest larvicidal efficacy of synthesized AgNPs was observed against 3^rd instar larvae at LC₅₀ 4.65 mg/L, LC₉₀ 14.17 mg/L and 4^th instar larvae with a concentration of LC₅₀ 6.10 mg/L, LC₉₀ 15.64 mg/L. A significant larvicidal activity was also observed with crude methanolic extracts against 3^rd instar larvae at a concentration LC₅₀ 41.74 mg/L, LC₉₀ 123.61 mg/L and 4^th instar larvae at a concentration of LC₅₀ 52.06 mg/L, LC₉₀ 166.40 mg/L as compared to the chloroform extract.

The authors report Myxobacteria virescens (M. virescens) mediated synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and its efficacy against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC-33591), Salmonella typhi (ATCC-51812), Escherichia coli (E. coli) (ATCC-14948), Klebsiella pneumoniae (MTCC-4030) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MTCC-4673). The organism exhibiting resistance to various antibiotics showed remarkable sensitivity, when used in combination of antibiotics and AgNPs. Antimicrobial property of AgNPs is playing a significant role in medicine and food storage. In this study, they have used M. virescens for the synthesis of AgNPs, which were characterised by using UV-Vis spectrophotometer, nano-particles tracking and analysis, zeta potential, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Synthesised AgNPs were impregnated into paper by three different methods, i.e. glass rod method (without binder), glass rod method (with binder) and direct synthesis of AgNPs on paper. Nanoparticles synthesis on paper showed the significant antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC-33591), Salmonella typhi (ATCC-51812), E. coli (ATCC-14948), Klebsiella pneumoniae (MTCC-4030) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MTCC-4673). Paper impregnated with AgNPs was used for wrapping of fruits (apples) which increases their shelf life up to 15 days. This study demonstrates a new method for wrapping of fruits, which increases the shelf life of apples.

Citrus fruit processing industries produce a vast quantity of waste materials as peel and pulp that are not handled properly. In present study, waste generated from citrus has been used for extraction of cellulose and nanocellulose. The aggregated cellulose, derived after alkaline treatment, was acid hydrolysed; resulted in reduction of the size of cellulose fibre. The cellulose showed amorphous structure revealed by X-ray diffraction analysis. Scanning electron microscopy analysis explained densely packed structure of nanocellulose. High magnification revealed break points in cellulose fibre due to acidic treatment; looked like carbon nanotubes. The simple solubility test demonstrated that different solvents had different effects on the dissolution of nanocellulose. The study reveals that citrus peel is also a good candidate of cellulose that can be utilised for different applications.

Green synthesis of nanoparticles is superior to physical and chemical methods as it is environment-friendly and cost-effective. The present study was carried out for inducing nanoparticles synthesis by zinc nitrate in the leaves extracts of olive. Further leaves extracts were evaluated for antiradical scavenging activity by 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl assay. Morphological and structural properties of the synthesised ZnO nanoparticles have been characterised using UV-Vis spectrophotometer, FTIR, TEM, XRD and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analysis. Further, zinc oxide nanoparticles were evaluated for antiradical scavenging activity by capacity of total antioxidant assay. Synthesised ZnO nanoparticles were confirmed by the absorption maxima at the wavelength of 370 nm. TEM image revealed that ZnO nanoparticles were spherical with average size 41 nm. FTIR investigation suggested that the flavonoids, glycosides, proteins and phenols molecules can play an important role in the stabilisation of ZnO nanoparticles.

This study aims to produce electrospun cellulose acetate (CA) membrane as the alternative supporting medium for a separation of crude polysaccharides by electrophoresis and a screening of their antibacterial activity. Among the tested conditions of fabrication, electrospun CA membrane at 57% porosity showed the best separation of each polysaccharide from the standard mixture and the crude extract of Aloe vera via electrophoresis. As compared with the commercial CA membrane, the produced electrospun CA membrane demonstrated more separated spots of polysaccharides. The antibacterial activity of the electrophoretic polysaccharide was also determined against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus as the inhibition zone after the bacterial culture agar was overlaid on the membrane and incubated for 24 h. The results of this study suggested the potential application of electrospun CA membrane combining with electrophoresis as a simple method for separating crude polysaccharides and screening for their antibacterial activity.

In the present study, an efficient biosurfactant producing bacterial strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa MKVIT3 was isolated from an oil logging area in Vellore district of Tamil Nadu, India. Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis was performed for the identification of different congeners present in the extracted biosurfactant. The column purified biosurfactant was used to stabilise the formation of silver nanoparticles (NP) using borohydrate reduction in reverse micelles. The silver NP were characterised using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, Powder-XRD TEM analysis and zeta potential. A comparative study of the antimicrobial activity and cytotoxic efficacy was done for the extracted purified biosurfactant and the silver NP. The LC-MS/MS analysis of the biosurfactant revealed the presence of five rhamnolipid congeners. The synthesised silver NP showed the characteristic absorption peak in UV-vis at 440 nm. Powder-XRD and TEM analysis revealed the average particle size of the NP as 17.89 ± 8.74 nm as well as their cubic structure. Zeta potential value of −30.9 mV suggested that the silver NPs are stable in the suspension. Comparative study of the antimicrobial activity revealed that the silver NP are more potent than the biosurfactant in inhibiting the growth of microbes. Cytotoxic activity revealed that the biosurfactant are more effective than the synthesised silver NP.

Tea polyphenols (TPPs) comprise preventive and therapeutic potentials against cancer, cardiovascular and neurological disorders. Chemical instability of TPP which leads to low bioavailability is the major constrain to its use as therapeutic agent. The authors prepared TPP encapsulated solid lipid nanoparticles (TPP-SLNs) to increase its stability and bioefficacy. Comparison of Fourier transformed infrared spectra of unloaded SLN, free TPP and TPP-SLN indicated encapsulation of TPP. Sustained release of TPP from TP-SLN was observed. TPP-SLN showed prolonged free radical scavenging activity compared with free TPP indicating protection of TPP. TPP-SLN showed activation of Caspases-9 and -3 cascades in breast cancer cell line (Michigan cancer foundation (MCF)-7) at in vitro conditions. Biochemical parameters were altered in Ehrlich ascetic carcinoma (EAC) cell bearing mice compared with normal (uninduced) mice which were ameliorated significantly by oral feeding of TPP-SLN. Oral administration (pre- and post-treated) of TPP-SLN in EAC bearing mice resulted in significant increase of plasma haemoglobin, glucose, superoxide dismutase and catalase when compared with EAC bearing control mice. Other biochemical parameters (cholesterol, bilirubin, triglyceride, urea, total protein, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase and aspertate transaminase were significantly decreased on oral administration (pre- and post-treated) of TPP-SLN in EAC bearing mice.

In this study, extracellular extract of plant growth promoting bacterium, Nitrobacter sp. is used for the bioconversion of AgNO₃ (silver nitrate) into Ag₂O (silver oxide nanoparticles). It is an easy, ecofriendly and single step method for Ag₂O NPs synthesis. The bio-synthesized nanoparticles were characterized using different techniques. UV-Vis results showed the maximum absorbance around 450 nm. XRD result shows the particles to have faced centered cubic (fcc) crystalline nature. FTIR analysis reveals the functional groups that are involved in bioconversion such as C–N, N–H and C=O. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX) spectrum confirms that the prepared nanoparticle is Ag₂O NPs. Particle size distribution result reveals that the average particle size is around 40 nm. The synthesized Ag₂O NPs found to be almost spherical in shape. Biosynthesized Ag₂O NPs possess good antibacterial activity against selected Gram positive and Gram negative bacterial strains namely Salmonella typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae when compared to standard antibiotic. In addition, Ag₂O NPs exhibits excellent free radical scavenging activity with respect to dosage. Thus, this study is a new approach to use soil bacterial extract for the production of Ag₂O NPs for biomedical application.

Sustainable methods are needed for rapid and efficient detection of environmental and food pollutants. The Sudan group of dyes has been used extensively as adulterants in food and also are found to be polluting the soil and water bodies. There have been several methods for detection of Sudan dyes, but most of them are not practical enough for common use. In this study, the electrochemical detection efficiency and stability of gold nanoparticle (AuNPs), silver NPs and Au–Ag bionanocomposites, synthesised by peanut skin extract, modified glassy carbon electrode has been investigated. The synthesised nanomaterial samples were characterised, for their quality and quantity, using ultra–visible spectroscopy, inductive coupled plasma mass spectrophotometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscope and field emission scanning electron microscope. The nanomaterial hybrid electrodes showed great efficiency and stability in the detection of Sudan IV compared with the other previous electrodes. The peak current of the Sudan IV oxidation and reduction was found to be proportional to its concentration, in the range of 10–80 µM, with a detection limit of 4 µM. The hybrid electrodes showed 90% stability in detection for 20 cycles.

The present study reports on biogenic-synthesised silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) derived by treating Ag ions with an extract of Cassia fistula leaf, a popular Indian medicinal plant found in natural habitation. The progress of biogenic synthesis was monitored time to time using a ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy. The effect of phytochemicals present in C. fistula including flavonoids, tannins, phenolic compounds and alkaloids on the homogeneous growth of AgNPs was investigated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The dynamic light scattering studies have revealed an average size and surface Zeta potential of the NPs as, −39.5 nm and −21.6 mV, respectively. The potential antibacterial and antifungal activities of the AgNPs were evaluated against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida kruseii and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. Moreover, their strong antioxidant capability was determined by radical scavenging methods (1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazil assay). Furthermore, the AgNPs displayed an effective cytotoxicity against A-431 skin cancer cell line by 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, with the inhibitory concentration (IC₅₀) predicted as, 92.2 ± 1.2 μg/ml. The biogenically derived AgNPs could find immense scope as antimicrobial, antioxidant and anticancer agents apart from their potential use in chemical sensors and translational medicine.
