Telecommunications has become a truly global activity. Consequently any college involved in teaching and research in the field of information technology should provide an education which covers the international features of the engineering profession. This paper discusses some design issues of mechatronic systems. New tools for the design of controllers are needed to apply more advanced control algorithms in an industrial environment. In addition, modelling and simulation tools can play an important role in evaluating designs at an early stage and in supporting design decisions. Wave energy research and development has been taking place for about 25 years now, with some progress towards exploiting the large energy potential of the world's ocean wave climates. Such an environmentally benign source of energy is highly desirable as it could contribute significantly to a sustainable energy future. Ocean waves are often powerful, but with extremely low frequencies of about 0.1 Hz (periods of around 10 s), and the success in generating electricity depends upon achieving a rotation of typically 1500 rpm. This paper considers the size and characteristics of wave resources, looks at some of the technologies most likely to be deployed to extract energy from waves and briefly mentions the economic assessment. - Author(s): P. Investigations were undertaken at a charitable school for disabled young people to see if reductions in the peak electrical load could provide cost savings. The study found an interesting and varied load shape with scope for peak load reduction. The subject of silicon microsystems is reviewed from a device manufacturing viewpoint. Techniques taken straight from the integrated-circuit industry were the starting point for this work. Because of the 3D nature of microsystems, different processes have been developed to fully exploit the potential of this field, particularly in substrate etching and lithography. The paper explores the developments that have been made in this area, and how it is likely that microelectronics and microsystems, from a manufacturing point of view, will diverge even further in the future. - Author(s): M. This article presents a short but detailed description of the optophone-its origins as a reading device for the blind, the various stages of its development, and the possibility of its use as a mobility aid for the blind.
