A new frequency-assignment plan for broadcasting in the long and medium wavebands will be implemented in 1978. An international conference met in January 1977 to prepare a plan for satellite broadcasting direct to the home, and in 1979 there is to be another conference to review all uses of the radio-frequency spectrum. Meanwhile, the technology is developing rapidly. How best can the broadcaster take advantage of these factors to improve his services to the public?

A new landing-guidance system is to be selected from a choice of three by the International Civil Aviation Organisation in the next year. The US/Australian system recently won a 6 to 4 vote approval from a panel set up to assess technically the three systems; but, the other two competitors, the UK and W. Germany, objected and obtained a deferment of the final decision. But what claim has the British system to acceptance?

The first telephone transmission route from Reading to Bristol was provided by overhead 400 lb/mile, open-wire copper pairs. To use the same technology to provide equivalent capacity as a waveguide over the same route would require 13 Mt of copper costing £10000 million and 85 million poles. A waveguide will require 15 t of copper and 1000 t of steel. But how does it compare with fibre-optic systems?

Although huge strides in technology have been made in the last 30 years, microwave antennas remain fundamentally the same as they were when first used in the Second World War. However, the design of microwave antennas was then primarialy an art, but now it is a sophisticated science

Interest in the use of the millimetre wavebands is increasing as the conventional radio spectrum becomes more congested. However, a system designer using these frequency bands must contend with the variability of the weather as well as possess an understanding of the effects of specific weather structures on radio propagation

In the last few years, the rare-earth permanent-magnet materials have found increasing application, as they have become avaliable economically, because of their high coercivity and energy product (BH max). However, these very desirable characteristics create additional difficulties in processing the magnets. One of the rare earths, samarium cobalt, is now becoming well established in a number of applications. One of these is in microwave tubes, in particular travelling-wave tubes. The equipment now used to magnetise, calibrate and measure permanent magnets is described with particular reference to rare-earth samarium cobalt as used in travelling-wave tubes
