Some experimental results for a capacitively loaded V antenna

    A V antenna with lumped capacitive loading is investigated experimentally. The loading is in the form of narrow transversal gaps along the antenna, which are progressively closer together towards the antenna ends. The antenna is found to exhibit remarkable broadband properties in admittance, and to have a more directive radiation pattern than a straight dipole with approximately similar loading.

    Although phase-script logic has obvious drawbacks for present-day computer applications, it is suggested that such logic could be useful for signal processing in connection with phase-shift-keyed data or p.c.m. transmission systems. An example of a regenerative repeater is given which shows significant circuit simplification and possible cost reduction over conventional regenerators. A phase-script logic regenerator realised at a carrier frequency of 4.5 GHz has shown a capability of operating to at least 125 Mbits. Proportionally higher bit rates should be possible with an increase in carrier frequency.

    It is shown that information can be transferred from one strip to another across a finite gap in which the carrier wave is subject to rapid decay. Each region in which a metal strip is located above the semiconductor, and insulated from it, is treated as an individual f.e.t. amplifier, exciting in the semiconductor a conduction current which flows into the adjacent similar region. Hence the carrier-wave decay between strips is unimportant. The effect of substituting ohmic contacts for the insulated ‘gates’ is discussed as an extension of this theory.

    A method is presented for the evaluation of the integral of the square of the derivative of the error of time-invariant linear systems excited by deterministic inputs. The method is relatively simple in theory and is easy to compute. A performance measure, as a sum of the integral of the square of the error and the integral of the square of the derivative of the error, can be used effectively for the design of optimum linear systems. Depending on the number of integral terms used, the performance measure can be made quite flexible.

    A field solution for the acoustic-surface-wave modes in infinite arrays of metal strips is applied to multistrip directional couplers consisting of a finite number of strips. Particular emphasis is put on the behaviour close to resonance, where the period in the array is one halfwavelength of the acoustic surface wave. Experiments on an array of 120 strips show good agreement with the theory.

    Design parameters for double-drift-region silicon IMPATT diodes for frequencies from 10 to 100 GHz are presented. The design is based on extensive large-signal computer simulations at one frequency of two different diode structures in a simple circuit. From these simulations, a simple design criterion was derived which permits the calculation of optimised impurity profiles for any desired frequency, with a small computer effort.

    An arrangement is proposed for the determination of the electrical axis of a paraboloid, utilising the effects of the subsidiary axial maxima that occur when the paraboloid is illuminated by a plane wave. By combining the signal received at the largest of these maxima with a sample taken from the main received signal in antiphase, a null detection system gives the location of the axis with high sensitivity. This is sufficient to enable the combination to be used to detect small distortions of the paraboloid, and as a precise axis-location device.

    The letter describes a class of RC active filters derived from RLC lossy ladder-filter prototypes. The presence of loss in the prototypes allows the use of active building blocks containing only one amplifier. Design methods are outlined, and ways of reducing sensitivity are discussed. The filters are economical in the number of amplifiers required, and a comparison indicates that they can be significantly less sensitive than active filters built as a cascade of non-interacting sections.
