Two nomograms are presented for estimating the zenith attenuation of radio waves, due to oxygen and water vapour in a cloudfree atmosphere, in the region 80 to 130 GHz, for a range of climatic conditions.

In a silver atomic-beam magnetic-resonance apparatus, it is possible to measure a so-called ‘superposition line’ that is a simultaneous resonance of both isotopes of silver. The letter is devoted to the analysis of the line shape of this line.

Many rays, predicted by Fresnel's laws to be totally reflected from a curved interface between two dielectric media, are only partially reflected. We derive a generalised Fresnel transmission coefficient to account for this loss. Our transmission coefficient applies to an arbitrary surface; e.g. one defined by two arbitrary radii of curvature. It can be used to determine radiation loss from bent and straight circular optical fibres.

The letter proposes a useful technique for the nondestructive tapping of charge-coupled devices, with a presentation of both theoretical and experimental results for device operation. The usefulness of the technique lies primarily in its simplicity of fabrication and operation.

The development of a simple mathematical model for the vector radiation fields from offset-parabolic-reflector antennas is outlined. The model permits the primary feed to be offset from the reflector geometric focus, and thus allows the study of multiple-beam antennas. Predicted results are shown and correlated with measurements made on a 30 GHz antenna system.

A method is given for implementing weighted polynomials p(kT)f(kT) by means of digital filters with multiple-shift sequences. The digital structure is obtained by adding to that realising the weight function f(kT) appropriate fractional delays and cyclically variable multipliers of integer values.

A new method is developed for increasing the type number of a control system by means of input processing. Several examples are given, one of them designed to illustrate the application of the standard forms derived by Graham and Lathrop.

A new optically active biphenyl compound has been synthetised. By incorporating this in certain biphenyl nematogens, a chemically/photochemically stable room-temperature cholesteric liquid crystal is produced. This is of positive dielectric anisotropy and gives the cholesteric-nematic electro-optical phase-change effect.

Results are given of a realisable i.f. filter that appears to give the best compromise design for the major performance parameters of an f.s.k. system: signal/noise ratio, intersymbol interference and tolerances to frequency and timing offsets. These results are determined by a computer f.m.-simulator program, keeping all the components ideal except the filters. In addition, various premodulation filters have been investigated, in conjunction with the i.f. filter, in terms of system performance.

Measurements of intermodulation distortion in supercritical transferred-electron reflection amplifiers show that the 3rd-order products are approximately 10 dB larger than expected if the diode had a simple parabolic relationship between its negative conductance and alternating terminal-voltage amplitude.
