Films of yttrium–iron garnet have been grown on gadolinium-gallium-garnet substrates by liquid-phase epitaxy with thickness up to 100 μm. Measurements by the bandstop-filter technique in the frequency range 2–8 GHz have shown resonance line-widths as low as 20 A/m(0.25 Oe). These results are compared with measurements of linewidth by the cavity-resonance technique at 9.5 GHz.

Using stepped arrays of transducers, the direction of propagation of surface acoustic waves can be controlled by varying the input frequency. This effect has applications in maintaining the optimum Bragg angle in acousto-optic devices for integrated optics. The measured beam-steering angle for a given frequency change follows the theory of Pinnow, where anisotropy effects are taken into account.

A new method of surface nondestructive testing using 1-dimensional acoustic holography has been demonstrated. A simulated defect 0.5 mm in diameter and 1 μm thick has been clearly resolved using 60 MHz acoustic surface waves, propagating along a quartz substrate.

Calculations have been made that take into account the effect of scattering by rain when computing attenuation from aerial temperatures measured with radiometers. Results for the frequency range 37–110 GHz show that attenuation can be significantly underestimated if it is assumed to arise solely from absorption.

A method is described for determining the large-signal admittance of an IMPATT diode from reflection-coefficient measurements at the output of a well-characterised IMPATT oscillator/amplifier circuit. Measurements at 10 GHz are presented and compared with the computed performance for the diode.

A method of applying synchronising dither signals to pseudo-random-binary-sequence measurements is described. This enables the linear response of certain systems to be obtained when small movements of their output are affected by stiction, Coulomb friction and/or backlash.

The transmission-line-matrix method of numerical analysis is developed to account for losses in the walls of a waveguide. Results are given in terms of the wave impedance of a waveguide with losses and also in terms of the power decay due to losses in the walls of a resonant rectangular cavity.

An analysis has been made of pulse dispersion in an optical fibre having a continuous radial variation of refractive index. Solutions are presented for Selfoc fibre showing the effects of mode and material dispersion and of group delay. The predicted dispersions range from very low values up to about 1 ns/km, depending on the launching conditions.

Measurements have been made on microwave transistors with different amounts of total base doping. It has been found that, as the total base doping is reduced, the parameters Veb, RB, hfe and gob show the effects expected from a smaller basedoping density and width, but the fT remains approximately constant.

The electrical properties of an annular junction field-effect transistor operating with a forward bias are presented. A recently proposed method of parameter estimation of a linear dynamic system with state-variable characterisation is compared with an earlier instrumental variable technique for estimating the parameters of the difference-equation model of the same system. For the first time, an investigation is made into the higher-order discrete modes in open microstrip lines. A complete set of original current-distribution functions is proposed. For the lowest-order mode, the calculated values of phase velocity are in very good agreement with known experimental results.

Using a quasistatic approach, the input impedance of a circular wire loop is calculated for the case where the Earth is represented as a homogeneous conducting halfspace. It is shown that the input resistance is only proportional to the ground conductivity when the loop radius is small compared with the electrical skin depth.
