A 2-dimensional numerical analysis of diffusion phenomena in semiconductors is presented. This analysis takes into account nearly all the physical phenomena known for diffusion in semiconductors, and accurate information on lateral diffusion is obtained.

Surface acoustic waves have been generated and detected on a biased electrostrictive substrate. A delay line with an insertion loss of 26 dB at 77 K has been constructed on strontium titanate. The temperature and electric-field dependence of the insertion loss are given.

It is shown that a Luenberger observer may be used to convert a transfer function having a numerator of degree m and a denominator of degree n (with m≤n−1) into one having a numerator of degree n+m−1 and a denominator of degree 2n−1, with the denominator polynomial and n−1 of the numerator coefficients assignable arbitrarily.

The detection errors of a digital crosscorrelator, utilising severely clipped, bandlimited Gaussian waveforms are investigated, and the probability distribution of the correlator output due to finite-duration waveforms and distortion by wideband Gaussian noise is derived and compared with experimental results.

The analysis by Kurokowa of the Rucker multidevice symmetrical oscillator circuit has been applied to the design of a single-tuned high-power IMPATT amplifier. It is shown that the stability of the amplifier régime can be predicted from a simple circuit model. An experimental circuit has successfully demonstrated the different circuit régimes when operating in a single coherent mode.

This letter points out the influence of the geometrical parameters of a shielded microstrip on its higher-order modes, it is shown that, in many configurations of practical interest, some properties of these modes are closely related to those of the partially dielectric-filled waveguide modes.

Computer simulations have been used to analyse device characteristics appropriate to an accumulation-layer transit mode. Data for GaAs, previously attributed to the limited-space-charge-accumulation mode, and for indium phosphide, are identified with accumulation transit oscillations.

Measurements of pulse dispersion in liquid-core multimode fibres have been made for different fibre curvatures and core diameters. The results indicate the presence of mode-conversion effects, and a mode-filtering mechanism is demonstrated with a probing beam of narrow angular width. By measuring transmission loss as a function of angle of incidence, the loss in the cladding material is obtained.

A previous letter by Davies et al. has described the methods of preparing microwave encapsulations using a glass-ceramic/copper encapsulation. Various configurations have been evaluated over the frequency band 26–40 GHz with c.w. Gunn oscillators. Results show that frequency saturation effects due to encapsulation parasitics can be avoided by the use of glass-ceramic encapsulations of suitable geometry.

Experimental evidence is given in support of a dielectric-waveguide model for filaments in gallium-arsenide lasers. Measurements of the variation with current of the spectral-mode frequencies of a single-heterojunction gallium-arsenide laser have been carried out both below and above threshold. It is suggested that the frequency shifts above threshold are due to the formation of filaments in the laser. Changes in the far-field pattern support this theory.

The conventional lowpass-bandpass transformation (transformation of each element separately) is not applicable to active RC networks because it leads to networks also containing inductors. A modified transformation, including explicit design formulas, will be described, which is applicable to the design of active RC bandpass filters realised by cascading 2nd-order sections.

Established means for measuring or detecting reactive power, power or power factor have an inherent time delay, mainly because of the need for output filtering. This letter describes an arrangement employing sampling techniques, which, since no filtering is necessary, offers substantial advantages for control and monitoring applications.

An efficient method for the computation of performance contours is presented. It is based on the simulation of large changes in the element values of a linear nonreciprocal circuit. One inversion per frequency of the nodal admittance matrix represents the major computational effort involved.

The accuracy of permittivity measurement using an open resonator has been studied. The error in the determination of permittivity arising from the imperfection of beam-wave theory is estimated. It is further shown that, by an improved method of analysing the experimental results, the effect of the imperfection in the theory is reduced and a great improvement in accuracy can be obtained.

A regulated self-oscillating transformer-coupled d.c./d.c. convertor is presented which has an auxiliary feedback loop to sustain self oscillations. While this circuit retains the inherent simplicity of self-oscillating circuits, it avoids certain starting problems which are usually encountered if transformer coupling is inserted into the self-oscillating feedback loop.

It is shown that band-to-band Auger recombination has a profound influence on the carrier-concentration profile and on the forward characteristic of p-s-n rectifiers (and thyristors) at high current densities, particularly when the diffusivity is decreased at high carrier concentrations by carrier-carrier scattering.

Recently developed high-permittivity low-loss temperature-stable dielectric materials have been used as resonators in microwave filters. The resulting low-loss filters possess extremely good temperature stability. Proper design and the use of metal-screw mode suppressors have eliminated the further problem in dielectric-resonator filters of spurious modes just above the passband.
