A slow nondispersive antisymmetric flexural wave is tightly bound to the apex of a wedge. An acoustic convolver, which takes advantage of its characteristics to enhance efficiency, is described. It is demonstrated that wedge waves can be generated and tapped using photolithographically defined transducers.

A new probing technique has been employed to determine the ion density trapped by the potential well of an electron beam as used in microwave tubes, and unexpectedly high values of ionic charge have been found on the axis, the strong space-charge fields of which are neutralised by slow secondary electrons.

A synthesis procedure has been developed which allows for the correction of diffraction errors in the design of acoustic-surface-wave pulse-compression and expansion filters. The method is described and results are presented on the improvement in performance of a particular filter after allowance for diffraction errors.

A straightforward series-parallel procedure is derived for the transformerless realisation of biquadratic impedances having double zeros and arbitrary, possibly complex, poles; or vice versa. The synthesis avoids the tedious task of previous minimisation, and the appropriate surplus factor is expressed as a simple function of the coefficients of the given biquadratic form.

The summed sensitivity invariants are derived by a 2-parameter dimensional analysis. This approach clarifies the limitation of these invariants to circuits with only two kinds of elements, and yields directly all generalisations to distributed or active networks.

Many of the characteristics of threshold switching devices may be explained in terms of a simple space-charge-injection model if it is assumed that switching occurs at a critical electric-field strength. Experimental evidence to support this hypothesis is described.

Acoustic surface waves have been transferred from yz lithium niobate to s.t. cut quartz surfaces across thin epoxy-resin bonds in a planar geometry. In the best case to date, only 7 dB transmission loss was measured through two bonds at 50 MHz in a lithium-niobate-quartz-lithium-niobate structure.

A low-loss microstrip triplate transmission line using alumina substrates is described, and its application as a dynamic data store capable of operating at clock frequencies in the gigahertz region is discussed. One such store of 23 bit capacity and 1 GHz bit rate is detailed.

A method is described which, in its exhaustive application, synthetises logic functions by means of any chosen gates or subsystems. The method employs Boolean matrices and is computer-oriented. The algorithm in its simplest form does not afford optimisation, except on a comprehensive-search basis. In this respect, the procedure is similar to those of Roth et al. and Ashenhurst, and embodies case of implementation together with the ability to handle multiple-output problems.

A mathematical proof for the absolute minimum number of double-pole double-throw reversing switches required for permuting n×n terminals has been derived. Several permuting networks of different capabilities can be accommodated in parallel to perform all possibilities of the analogue circuits for automatic patching.

A symmetric V-shaped frequency-modulation chirp is used to demonstrate pulse compression of variable-bandwidth signals centred at 1.3 GHz. The compression device is based upon the nonlinearity in a lithium-niobate longitudinal-wave acoustic delay line. Uniformity of the interaction region is achieved so that the convolution is not spatially weighted.

The preswitching nonohmic behaviour of amorphous-semiconductor switches could result from either Joule heating or space-charge-limited currents. After the ‘forming’ of a virgin device, electron-microscope examinations have revealed a channel whose composition differs significantly from the matrix. Also, the I/V characteristics of the blocking states of virgin and formed devices are significantly different. The preswitching I/V characteristics of a Ge15Te81S4 chalcogenide-glass switch at 300 K have been explained by Joule heating in the formed channel, with an estimated temperature rise of 25 degC above ambient at the centre of a monostable switch.

The range of applications of bucket-brigade circuits is limited by inherent device limitations. At present, the most severe of these appears to be a relatively poor charge-transfer efficiency, which results in a limited signal bandwidth. In this letter, the bandwidth characteristics of bucket-brigade circuits are described, and close agreement between computed and experimental results is shown.

Two previous methods for Walsh-function generation, one using a shift register and the other using a counter, are combined to give a high-sequency Walsh-function generator which has very high speed but does not require excessively long shift registers.
