A Pockels-cell Q switch has been operated in a manner analogous to a saturable absorber, thus allowing the simple and reliable selection of a single longitudinal mode. A TEM00 mode Nd-CaWO4 laser has produced 400 kW pulses in a single longitudinal mode with a shot-to-shot frequency stability of about 0.01 cm−1.

The requirements of modern electrodischarge-machining power supplies are briefly reviewed, and the shortcomings of conventional equipment are detailed. A new and flexible design is described, which has an improvement in electrical efficiency of approximately seven times and a dependent drive to increase the controlled power input to the working gap.

The properties of the lowest flexural mode of a wedge-shaped elastic waveguide are discussed. It is shown that this mode can be used as a dispersionfree topographic guide for acoustic surface waves. Curves completely characterising the guided mode for any value of the top angle are presented.

Low-loss liquid-core fibre-optical waveguides having a transmission loss of 10 dB/km has been made using commercially available glass tubing. The loss is less than 20 dB/km over a wavelength range of greater than 0.8–1.1 μm, and, at the semiconductor laser wavelength of 0.9 μm, has a value of 14 dB/km. This is the first low-loss fibre to be made using glass.

The small-signal impedance of a Pt-n-p+ device has been computed using a model which describes in detail the physical mechanisms in the depleted n region. The small-signal negative resistance is shown to be both frequency- and temperature-dependent at a given bias-current density.

In the long-distance transmission of television signals, the long-term step response of a chain of a.c.-coupled amplifiers is of interest. A solution is obtained for the asymptotic response, where the transfer functions are first-order, and some speculations are included about generalising the result to higher orders.

It is shown that ideal lowpass filtering can be expressed in terms of Hilbert transforms. This suggests that a wide variety of linear time-invariant filters with ideal ‘brickwall’ transfer functions can be obtained by combinations of time-varying filters employing Hilbert-transform elements. In particular, expressions are presented for real and complex bandpass filters. Application to another truncation process, time windowing, is pointed out.

Two properties are given for the 1st- and 2nd-order sensitivities of linear circuits. These may be used to compute sensitivities with respect to reflection coefficients of terminations connected to the circuit ports, in terms of scattering parameters of the circuit obtained from the original by disconnecting the terminations themselves.

A design procedure is described for a Cassegrain antenna employing a dielectric cone feed. Modal methods are used to determine the cone geometry, while a geometric-optics method is used to determine the subreflector profile. Good agreement is observed between measured and predicted radiation patterns for a 1.2 m-diameter parabolic antenna utilising the feed and operating at a frequency near 11 GHz.

A network configuration is described which offers a maximal number of alternative paths between pairs of vertices for a given number of links. A trunking scheme for switched networks, based on this configuration, offers a better ratio of alternative paths to crosspoints than is given by simple link trunking.

The successful application of space diversity to achieve a high propagation reliability over line-of-sight microwave links requires proper separation between diversity antennas, whereby the signals received at the antennas are sufficiently decorrelated. The multipath-propagation model is examined, and en expression is derived for the envelope correlation coefficient which is a function of antenna spacing and is dependent on the parameters of the troposphere.

The letter describes a computer program which efficiently evaluates the matrix exponential for a wide range of matrix norms. The familiar series-expansion method is applied to a normalised matrix and a binary powering technique is used to obtain the final result.

An experimental 64-bit m.o.s. associative memory has been developed from a limit-case design study. Speeds in excess of 50 MHz are reported at a cost per bit that could approach eight times that for a conventional m.o.s. dynamic r.a.m. The design of the basic associative memory cell is described.

Experimental and theoretical values of admittance are presented for a monopole antenna made in the form of a row of identical conducting, mutually insulated cylinders. The influence of the number of cylinders making monopoles of equal length and with equal total gapwidths between the cylinders is analysed. It was found that such antennas exhibit broadband properties similar to those of antennas with tapered capacitive loading.
