This letter develops a method for calculating the time taken to restore synchronism of a digital transmission system with backward-acting framing by digital signals of periodic pattern interleaved among the transmitted data. An equation for the average average reframing time gives predictions in good agreement with experiment.

In the communication being commented on, a method is ‘proposed’ for correcting for the effects of the measuring antenna in the determination of far-field aerial patterns from near-field measurements. This method was previously proposed in a talk in 1963 and has been substantially implemented in theoretical, experimental, and computational work. References are given.

Stochastic automata have been shown to require less states than deterministic automata in the solution of certain recognition and hypothesis-testing problems. This letter extends the result to a class of control problems involving the regulation of a discrete dynamical system.

This letter shows how the splitting of the forward and reverse current/voltage curves of a Gunn diode may be interpreted in terms of different models of contact damage, and proposes a simple test technique to obtain a quantitative measure of contact quality. Experimental verification of this technique is presented, showing a correlation between device efficiency and a contact parameter β.

A π network for carrier generation–recombination–trapping processes under arbitrary steady-state conditions is obtained, which has the following features which are useful for computer calculations of the admittance functions of semiconductor devices: the admittances are positive real, the voltage-controlled current sources are connected between the hole and electron quasi-Fermi potential nodes, and the current sources vanish at zero external excitation.

It is shown that j.f.e.t. structures containing a semiconductor substrate can sometimes exhibit a substantially lower saturation resistance than structures containing an ideally insulating substrate. This characteristic is attributed to velocity-limited carrier transport, in conjunction with the spreading of majority carriers into the semiconductor-substrate material.

A simple numerical technique is used to design controller pulse transfer functions which minimise the overall error criterion. A real factorisation of discrete noncyclic-convolution operators is established which yields a fast procedure for performing noncyclic convolutions. The transformations associated with the factorisation need only real summations and subtractions for evaluation purposes, unlike the fast Fourier transform but like the fast Walsh transform.

The velocity/field characteristic of n InP has been determined up to 24 kV/cm using a microwave-heating technique. For comparison, the velocity/field characteristic of n GaAs, measured in the same equipment, is also presented. For both InP and GaAs, the characteristic is compared with an experimental curve, determined from space-charge wave measurements, and with a theoretical curve. Information concerning relaxation effects of InP is obtained.

A digital-computer program has been used to compare the performance of an n+–p–p+ silicon avalanche diode with its more conventional p+–n–n+ complementary junction in IMPATT-oscillator operation. The computer simulation of the former junction predicts a significant improvement of oscillator efficiency (20.1 against 13.9%).

The performance of a frequency-shift-keying system is investigated as a function of the amount of adjacent-channel interference. New quantitative results are presented which show that, for a peak-to-peak frequency deviation of 0.7 times the bit rate and a receiver bandwidth of one times the bit rate, the frequency separation between channels can be reduced to about 1.6 times the bit rate without causing an undue amount of performance degradation.
