In a modification of a scheme due to Brown, a 4-level aperiodic input which gives rise to an almost periodic output is used to measure the impulse responses of the linear portions of a system consisting of two channels in parallel, one of which incorporates a zero-memory nonlinearity.

An algorithm, based on the T-triangle method, is given for the generation of all the trees in a nonoriented connected graph. The efficiency of the algorithm is verified by computer results.

An improved delta-modulation system is described which uses a delay line to obtain information about the ‘future’ behaviour of the input signal. Conditions of potential slope overload are detected before the signal is encoded and the encoding pattern altered accordingly. Computer simulation results show that signal/noise ratios can be 3 dB better than for simple delta modulation.

Measurements at an InSb-brass contact indicate that the application of a magnetic field perpendicular to the contact surfaces increases the contact resistance. This can be understood by assuming every conducting point to act as a Corbino disc. The effect also depends strongly on the mechanical load, which can be attributed to deformations of the contact surfaces.

MacFarlane has recently described a technique for designing controllers for multivariable systems that is based on the diagonalisation of the uncontrolled system which is yielded by its spectral representation. An extension is suggested here which enables the same technique to be employed when more general diagonalisations, which might be easier to compute, are employed.

Electron transfer between three appropriately coupled sets of conduction-band valleys produces transport properties peculiarly favourable for transferred-electron devices. The necessary conditions should obtain in InP and in InP-InAs and InSb-GaSb alloys. Monte Carlo calculations of the velocity/field characteristics for these materials are described.

To evaluate the odd-mode fringing capacitance against strip gap width in a parallel-coupled thick-strip transmission-line filter, Cohn has proposed two equations, one valid for the narrow-gap region and the other for the wide-gap region. A simple technique to combine these equations into a single one valid for the entire range of gap widths is presented. It is shown that the results are similar to those obtained by Getsinger from a different approach, and are satisfactory for filter design, since they lead to good agreement with experiment.

The approximate eigenvalues for TE and TM modes excited in a quasipyramidal horn waveguide are computed using an asymptotic formula relating the associated Legendre functions to the Bessel and Neumann functions. The method provides a simple and accurate technique for calculating the eigenvalues of the fundamental and higher-order modes.

The letter describes the numerical method used at Istituto di Elettronica dell'Università di Pisa, Italy, for processing experimental data obtained in measuring complex dielectric permittivity by dielectrometer. The letter shows that it is possible to obtain high-precision results without using Von Hippel tables.

A technique of treating the stability of a.c. arc discharges, based on the macroscopic characteristics of the arc and its associated circuit elements, is presented. Conditions for stable arc currents and optimum arc waveforms are developed. The derived conditions represent rationalised criteria for the design of the arc circuit.

An analytic method is outlined for the calculation of average conductivity of diffused layers in silicon for a complementary error function and Gaussian impurity profiles and the results are found to be in good agreement with those obtained by the numerical integration method. It is shown that the results for Gaussian distribution are obtained directly from the derivations for an error-function distribution. The method is also useful for the estimation of the temperature coefficient of the diffused layers.

A new active distributed RC structure, utilising exponential lines, is proposed for realising lowpass transfer functions. Explicit design equations are given for realising a pair of complex poles using this structure. This is based on a dominantpole approximation of the structure. It is shown that the pole Q sensitivity decreases with increasing taper and that it may be made considerably lower than that of Kerwin's structure which uses uniform lines.
