The excess attenuation due to rainfall on a 24 km microwave path in Bedfordshire between Cranfield and Everton was measured over the period January 1967 to December 1968. A comparison is made between the fading at the three frequencies to determine the relationship between them. The results are compared with the theoretical work of Oguchi.

Techniques are introduced to reduce r.o.m. wordlength in microprogrammed digital computers, whilst microcommands are stored in a completely decoded form, by means of appropriate segmentation of the r.o.m. Some comparisons with conventional methods for r.o.m. reduction, involving partial coding of microcommands, are also carried out.

A large-signal equivalent circuit is described based on a simplified analysis of the operation of a planar transistor. The extra stored charge in saturation and the d.c. characteristics are related to the geometry and impurity profile, and the results are used to define the value of the circuit elements.

An iterative array for nonrestoring division is described. It uses a logic cell which has been proposed for an array for binary square-root extraction. The array for binary division is fully iterative in terms of cell logic and in the interconnection pattern between the cells.

Passive systems are either true passive or quasipassive, depending on whether they come to thermal equilibrium with their surroundings. It follows from the principle of microscopic reversibility that any true-passive linear 2-port must be reciprocal if it does not incorporate a static magnetic field.

Observations of microwave emission from n type Ge at 77 K are reported. These differ from earlier observations in that they are produced by a transverse electromagnetic wave propagating across the electric field which is used to bias the specimen into n.d.c.

A method for the simultaneous evaluation of the coefficients of a number of network polynomials and the formation of the first and second partial derivatives of these coefficients with respect to the circuit elements is developed with special regard to accuracy and speed of calculation. Signal-averaging and time-delay techniques have been successfully adapted to experiments on temporal wave echoes and Landau damping in plasma, utilising commonly available instrumentation. Noise-free damped waves can be observed over a period of several hundred microseconds.

The effects of both the bulk charge due to the drain depletion region and the saturation of carrier velocity on the current/voltage characteristics of short-channel m.o.s.t.s are considered. Theoretical calculations based on both 2-dimensional and 1-dimensional models show close agreement with experimental measurements.

Many different sets of stability criteria have been published, some of which are incorrect and others unnecessarily complicated. A reappraisal of the problem shows that the simplest criteria sufficient for unconditional stability are K>1 and |Δ|<1.

C.W. fundamental oscillations in the frequency range 30–40 GHz with an output power of 120 mW were observed on devices fabricated from an epitaxial n++−n−n+ layered wafer of GaAs. Conversion efficiencies of up to 7% were observed. The optimum bias voltage was seen to be about 4.5–5.5 times the threshold voltage for the best r.f. output in our circuit. Effects of bias voltage and tuning conditions on power output and frequency are described.

The ray-optical method, which has been successfully employed for the analysis of diffraction and scattering problems, is used to derive the Green's function in a rectangular cavity. Despite the asymptotic approximations inherent in the method, it is shown that it gives a physical or geometrical insight into the mechanisms of propagation in guiding structures leading to exact or rigorous solutions not always provided by other methods.

The use of asymmetrical element spacings in thinned aerial arrays is shown to give symmetrical radiation patterns. The use of asymmetrical element spacings gives lower sidelobe levels than symmetrical spacings. With an array of nine elements in a 19λ array, the greatest sidelobe level is reduced from −5.61 dB to −6.87 dB by using an asymmetrical array instead of a symmetrical array.
