A logic tree employing only 2-input gates is described which is capable of mechanising any desired function of the variable set. The tree can therefore represent either a fixed relationship, or vary adaptively by adjusting the input parameters. It is shown that this structure can be used to derive economic multilevel representations of functions directly from the canonical form which require only 2-input gates. The design procedure can operate effectively with only a simple set of design rules.

A method for determining, at microwave or millimetre-wave frequencies, the relative permittivity and the saturation magnetisation of a ferrite is described. The method is based on the measurement of the guide wavelength in a rectangular guide completely filled with the ferrite and magnetised transversely. Tentative results are presented.

An analogue multiplier consisting of controlled current-splitting devices and a feedback technique to stabilise its transfer characteristics is presented. An implementation of the technique making use of the exponential characteristics of the bipolar transistor is described. Results showing good agreement with theory are given. A method of stabilising the gain of a parametric amplifier from the pumped conduction current of a varactor diode is described. Long-term stabilities of 0.1dB/week have been achieved on a 13dB-gain amplifier with diode currents of less than 1 μA.

A circuit which utilises a Gunn diode with a coaxial line to generate rectangular waves is described. This circuit operating in the frequency range up to 200MHz can also behave as a memory element.

The modulation sensitivity and the inherent a.m. percentage of IMPATT oscillators with internal current modulation were measured as a function of the modulation frequency in the range 10Hz-1 MHz. Although constant above 100kHz, both quantities were found to vary with the modulation frequency below 100kHz. Assuming thermal effects as the origin of these variations, the possible relative change of the modulation sensitivity was calculated to be about 20%, taking into account the temperature dependence of the ionisation coefficient and of the drift velocity. With Q factors ranging between 20 and 150, the modulation sensitivity varied between 3 and 0.3 MHz/mA, and the ratio of a.m. percentage and modulating current varied between 7 and 10% per mA.

A switch made up from four avalanche transistors is described It produces 80V across a 50Ω load in less than 1ns, and the jitter with respect to the trigger pulse is less than 30ps.

To determine the transistor thermal resistance, one of the temperature-dependent parameters of the transistor (e.g. VEB must be measured. Unfortunately, this also depends on VCB, which alters, changing the heating power. A relatively simple and accurate ΔVEB method is proposed, insensitive to collector-voltage variations.

A method of random-data detection applicable to cases of low-voltage signal/noise ratios is described. The characteristics of noise, with and without the signal present, are discussed, and an outline of the detection principle and the practical detection system is given. The performance is discussed of J band pulsed Gunn-effect oscillators with typical power outputs of 7 W and efficiencies of 9%. It is concluded that, in view of the high biasing fields used and their comparatively high efficiencies, the devices are operating in the hybrid domain mode.

Calculation of the axial-symmetric modes of the electromagnetic resonances in an open ferrite sphere is described. The diameter of the sphere and the wavelength of the field are of the same order, and the electric field cannot be neglected, necessitating the solution of an eigenvalues problem subject to Maxwell's equations.

Equations describing oscillations of a Gunn generator coupled to an external resonant circuit in some cases coincide with the equations of motion of a 1-dimensional harmonic oscillator changing its equilibrium point and friction coefficient by jumping. The condition for the phase trajectory to be closed results in a simple dependence between the resonant-mode parameters and gives also tuning limits for such a mode.
