    A microwave locating reflectometer has been described which is capable of producing a plot of the (complex) reflection coefficient Γ against distance along a waveguide, and is thus able to discriminate between various individual reflections set up in a microwave component. No sharp pulses or step functions are required, and a plot is produced in real time without (digital) computation. The instrument is also capable of producing either a swept- or fixed-frequency Smith-chart display of the total reflection coefficient of the component.

    Measurements of the frequency/power characteristics of planar Gunn diodes with concentric electrodes are presented. In resistive circuits they show broad electronic tuning with bias voltage (6.6–18GHz). This is compared with theoretical predictions. In cavities, the devices operate in the delayed domain mode with restricted tuning, and their power outputs are maximal under saturated-transit-frequency conditions.

    The self and mutual impedances of two coupled cylindrical antennas embedded in a hot plasma have been measured. A large volume of hot plasma was provided by a mercury-arc discharge. Pairs of monopoles with various lengths were embedded in the plasma volume and excited by r.f. signals. The experimental results show that, near the plasma frequency, the self and mutual impedances undergo rapid changes as the plasma density is varied. The effect of an electroacoustic wave on the self impedance is not very outstanding. However, this wave has a significant effect on the mutual impedance, as can be evidenced by the appearance of electroacoustic resonances (Tonks-Dattner resonances) in the mutual-impedance curves.

    A phenomenon is described which was observed during experiments with low-current arcs 0.1–1 A. In these experiments, it was noted that the arc voltage experienced a substantial reduction in magnitude when the cathode was placed in a region of appreciable longitudinal magnetic field. With the cathode in very low magnetic fields, the arc voltage exhibited the behaviour characteristic of the Hoh and Lehnert effects and the Kadomtsev instability.

    Pattern recognition has usually been regarded as a two-part process requiring both measurement and classification. It has also been accepted by many workers that the classifier can best be designed using an automatic learning process. However it is well known that many of the proposed learning schemes sometimes fail to realise the most efficient use of the available storage. This difficulty usually arises whenever the initial classifier was a poor approximation to the teacher. The design of the classifier using such learning techniques would clearly be more successful if a method could be found of providing a good starting state for the learning machine. The letter defines an algorithm and examines its performance in this task of initialising a learning machine.

    The radiation pattern of a small corrugated conical horn with a wide flare angle has been calculated by means of a Kirchhoff-Huygens integration. An assumption was made about the phase relationbetween the TE and the TM parts of the spherical hybrid mode in the horn. The solutions of the characteristic equation became dependent on the electrical length of the horn. Calculations and experiments showed a good agreement.

    Layers of ptype germanium have been produced by bombardment of ntype specimens with 40keV Ga+ or In+ ions. Measurements of Hall mobility and carrier concentration as a function of depth suggest that the degradation of mobility due to the radiation damage produced by the implant is completely removed after anneal. 50% of Ga ions and 10–15% of In ions became electrically active. These percentages were independent of dose over the range measured (1011cm-2 3 × 1013cm-2).
