Significantly faster low-cost navigation systems could be on the horizon with the first real-time implementation of a 3D reduced inertial sensors system/global positioning system (RISS/GPS) navigation algorithm on a real-time embedded system. Researchers at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) have built a brain–computer interface (BCI) system that uses a computer monitor's refresh rate to produce visual stimuli at varying frequencies. Their BCI design, in which the user controls a virtual keyboard, looks promising as a practical solution that will allow patients with motor diseases to communicate with other people or their environment.

3D occupies the unique position of being both the latest and the oldest technology in digital television. After short periods in the 1920s, 1950s and 1980s, it is set today to provide the next wave of both digital broadcast television and packaged media. Tools to help the standardisation and choice of 3D television are outlined. Today, only ‘plano-stereoscopic’ television systems are practical, but they are the first step in a 3D television evolution. This Letter suggests what the evolutionary path may be. Then a simple way to understand the inter-relationship between what the camera sees and what the viewer perceives for first-generation 3D is presented. Finally, a set of conditions that can be used for quality evaluation of first-generation 3D television is offered.

An antenna array using in-package bondwire to perform beamforming for 60 GHz applications is presented. 1 mil gold bondwire designed to resonate at 60 GHz was employed as an antenna array to provide smaller area and a cheaper way to manufacture it. A high-gain dual-polarised planar etched slot array for use in wireless local area networks (WLAN) is presented. Two sets of four collinear slots are used as radiators for each polarisation. Each set of four collinear slots is constructed as a centre-fed long slotline, with etched crossovers to split the slotline into four resonant and in-phase half-wavelength slots. A reflector etched on a separate substrate spaced a quarter-wavelength away from the slot array ensures unidirectional radiation. The final antenna achieved a gain of 14.5 dBi, a return loss better than 10 dB, and port isolation in excess of 30 dB over the 2.4–2.484 GHz WLAN frequency band. - Author(s): H. Kim and C.W. Jung

Proposed is a novel method to improve the bandwidth of a coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed tapered slot antenna (TSA) using a stub with multi-transformation characteristics for ultra-wideband applications. By inserting multipaths inside a conventional circular slotline open stub, the necessary condition for multi-transformation characteristics for bandwidth enhancement is fulfilled. A compact wideband printed MIMO antenna system (of four elements) with high isolation is presented. The proposed MIMO antenna system with an overall lateral size of only 0.43λ×0.43λ can offer 22.8% bandwidth (1.63–2.05 GHz) and isolation of better than 24 dB. The measured gain is larger than 2.72 dBi over the whole band, and the calculated envelope correlation coefficient is better than 0.01. A substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) cavity backed active slot antenna oscillator is proposed, the operation frequency of which can be tuned by means of a properly connected varactor. The cavity backed structure permits overcoming potential problems such as heat dissipation and unwanted surface wave modes in large array implementations, and may provide better phase noise performance. The use of SIW technology permits a cost-effective fabrication process and simple implementation at millimetre-wave frequency, for radar and communication applications. Full-wave FEM-based analysis is used for the design of the radiating structure, while harmonic balance and transient simulations are employed in the design of the active antenna oscillator and in the study of the stability of its steady-state solutions. Tunable active antenna prototypes have been implemented and measured.

Artificial neural network techniques have become very common as equalisation solutions in several types of communication channels. These neural networks are presented in many topologies. The suitable choice of a topology for equalisation purpose depends on different criteria such as: convergence rate, bit error rate, computational complexity, among many others. Reported is an investigation into the behaviour of a structure similar to a decision feedback equaliser employed to equalise time-varying channels. The structure, a single recurrent perceptron, is based on a simplified recurrent neural network. The Gauss-Newton algorithm has been used to estimate the synaptic weights of the perceptron during the training and testing phases. Despite the simplicity of implementation and low computational cost, it has been shown that the proposed topology presents some good comparative performances compared with more complex structures based on recurrent neural networks and multilayer perceptrons using Kalman filters.

A new approach to realise computer monitor flickers that can be used to elicit steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEP) at a flexible frequency is proposed. An SSVEP-based brain–computer interface (BCI) with 16 targets was then implemented using the proposed method. In an online test on three subjects, a high information transfer rate of 75.4 bits/min was achieved.

A technique for automated generation of compact behavioural models is presented. The extracted models are capable of capturing highly nonlinear systems with good accuracy. The proposed technique is an extension to the well known trajectory-based piecewise models, where local expansions of the state trajectory are stitched together using weighting functions. This idea is combined with response surface models for generating compact models in standard VHDL-AMS that enable widespread use of trajectory-based models.

Proposed is an illumination normalisation approach based on the block-wise Walsh-Hadamard transform (WHT) for face recognition under illumination variations. An appropriate number of low-frequency WHT coefficients is zeroed to compensate for illumination variations. Experimental studies demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the discrete cosine transform in the cases with larger illumination variations, while for the cases with less illumination variations the method can still obtain comparable performances with a lower computational cost. The nonlocal means (NLM) filter is one of the most popular denoising approaches and there have been many improvements regarding its weight function and parameter optimisation. However, those improvements have not removed artifacts such as the false texture pattern, which occurs when the smoothing parameter in the weight function is small. The smoothness in the flat region and the sharpness in the texture region without the artifacts can be ensured by accurately estimated weights, which can be calculated with sufficient similar patches. In this reported work, a NLM algorithm with weight update is used to exploit the weights from relatively similar locations as well as the weights from the centre location. A robust high-order matched filter (RHMF) for automatic target detection in hyperspectral images is proposed. The classical detection methods mainly focus on second-order statistics and do not take intrinsic uncertainty or variability of target spectral signatures into account. For automatic target detection in a hyperspectral image, most interesting targets usually occur with low probabilities and small population and they generally cannot be described by second-order statistics. Also, one difficult point in target detection is the inherent variability in target spectral signatures. A new visual saliency detection approach is proposed. The proposed approach exploits the ant colony optimisation technique to measure the image's saliency via depositing the pheromone (through ants' movements) on the image. Furthermore, the ants' movements are steered by the local phase coherence of the image. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed approach.

Several new classes of balanced quaternary sequences of odd period have been constructed by using inverse Gray mapping and binary sequences with three autocorrelation values. The maximum nontrivial autocorrelations of the constructed sequences are shown to be √5, which reach the best known maximum nontrivial autocorrelation for quaternary sequences of odd period.

Presented is the observation of a quadratic temperature dependence of the Cs 0–0 ground state hyperfine resonance frequency in a single Neon (Ne) buffer gas vapour microcell. The inversion temperature, expected to be theoretically independent of the buffer gas pressure, is measured to be about 80°C for two different samples. A proposal to develop chip scale atomic clocks with improved long-term frequency stability, simpler configuration (a single buffer gas instead of a buffer gas mixture) and then relaxed constraints on pressure accuracy during the cell filling procedure is presented.

A design for a low-frequency 1/f optical noise generator using fractional statistics is proposed and demonstrated for the first time. The 1/f noise samples were obtained by transformation functions performed on pseudorandom binary sequences that modulate a laser source. The 1/f spectrum representation of the optical noise samples shows that this proposition is very promising for the investigation of this noise effect in optical devices and system reliability. It can also be useful for the spectral distribution measurements of ultra-narrow linewidth lasers.

The design, fabrication, and an experiment, of a bistable MEMS switch with magnetostatic latching and electrothermal actuation for achieving lower power consumption are presented. The bistabilities feature a crisscross-shaped torsion/cantilever beam system and a permanent magnet for holding the closed state. Therefore, the device is suitable for bistable switching relay applications. Electrical performances have been characterised by a self-built test system using an Agilent oscilloscope. In addition, switching between two stable states of the microswitch was successfully validated with the WYKO NT1100 optical profiling system. Results show that the consumed exciting power is only 0.64 mJ in one DC pulse.

The realisation of a GaAs-based distributed feedback laser based upon regrowth of standard AlGaAs upper cladding upon patterned InGaP is presented. A novel GaAs-based high-index-contrast ridge waveguide quantum well heterostructure laser is demonstrated, which features an etched and wet thermally oxidised rear facet with a deposited metal mirror suitable for wafer scale integration. The self-aligned fabrication process utilises a single deep etch step and oxygen-enhanced non-selective wet oxidation of the AlGaAs heterostructure ridge sidewall and the entire exposed facet, including the waveguide core region composed of low-Al content AlGaAs material not readily oxidised by conventional techniques. A resonant cavity waveguide device structure is reported which incorporates a grating structure to couple the vertical incident light into the waveguide and uses Bragg grating to constitute a resonator. An optimised real-time realisation of a mixture particle filter (PF) integrated 3D navigation system for land vehicles based on Global Positioning System (GPS) and Reduced Inertial Sensors System (RISS) is introduced. The PF is a nonlinear filter that can handle errors and uncertainties. Although a mixture PF decreases the number of particles compared to a sampling/importance resampling (SIR) PF, the implementation on embedded systems needs further optimisation to run at higher rates. Introduced is an optimised real-time implementation of a mixture PF on a 600 MHz ARM processor. The optimisation is based on fast median-cut clustering to reduce the complexity of search in the weighting step. The proposed real-time system was tested on a real mobile robot trajectory, showing fast and accurate performance.

The aim of this reported work is to extend a recent, simple and effective algorithm for the estimation of the probability density function and cumulative density function to the case of bidimensional random vectors. The algorithm is based on an information maximisation approach. The nonlinear bidimensional function involved in the algorithm is adaptively modified during learning and is implemented by using a bidimensional spline function.

A boundary refinement method using a new hidden Markov model (HMM) topology is proposed for automatic phonetic speech segmentation. The proposed method has the ability to work at high frame rates and the training and boundary refinement stages are easy and fast. The method is data driven and can be adapted to any speech segmentation problem provided that a training set is available. Given an initial segmentation obtained by forced alignment using an HMM based phone recogniser, 20% decrease in boundary errors is achieved.

Proposed is the design of a linearised CMOS bidirectional distributed amplifier (DA) that greatly suppresses the third-order intermodulation (IM3) distortion. The drain and gate transmission lines are staggered to purposely mismatch their time-delay and filter out the IM3 distortion. A modified CMOS cross-coupled cascomp circuit is proposed to enhance the linearity of the gain cell with a varactor-based active post nonlinear drain capacitance compensator for wider linearisation bandwidth. The proposed linearised CMOS bidirectional DA achieves a measured IM3 reduction of 20 dB in both RF directions, with ultra-wideband 0.1 to 9.5 GHz frequency of operation. - Author(s): Y. Gao and J. The outage performances of three transmit antenna selection (TAS) strategies in AF (amplify-and-forward) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relaying over independent and identically distributed Nakagami-m fading channels are investigated. In particular, asymptotic lower bounds on the outage probabilities of the TAS strategies are derived and diversity orders are analysed. The presented expressions are general for the three TAS strategies with an arbitrary antenna configuration and a fading environment with arbitrary values of severity parameters m≥0.5.
