A high directivity millimetre-wave antenna based on woodpile electro-magnetic bandgap (EBG) material at W-band is presented. The woodpile EBG structure is fabricated using the ceramic extrusion freeforming technique with high purity alumina powder. The designed antenna can achieve a narrow beam without using an array. A dual-linear polarised antenna module for frequency-domain duplex base-station antenna arrays is described. Designed for the frequency bands 1.92–1.98 and 2.11–2.17 GHz, the antenna radiators are matched to −17 dB return loss. The antenna modules have been arranged in a dual-linear polarised array. Inter-element coupling has been reduced by insertion of conducting walls. The module features separate feeds for transmit and receive signals, and realises an isolation of 20 dB in the described array arrangement. The balanced-fed radiator elements are surface-mounted onto a printed circuit board, which serves as a groundplane and provides the balun structures. Radiators are made of three-dimensional parts suited for injection moulding. Prototypes built using a stereolithography process verify expected performance by measurements. - Author(s): S. It is a common belief that multiple transmit antennas have to be placed far apart in order to avoid undesired effects such as mutual coupling, changing beampatterns, antenna mismatching losses, and correlation. The following radio communication setup is considered: two λ/4-monopole ground-plane transmit antennas, a single receive antenna, 4QAM modulation, Alamouti space-time coding, uncoded single carrier transmission at 2.4 GHz, indoor scenario. By measurements, the impact of very low transmit antenna spacing on the average uncoded BER over transmit-power performance of such a radio link, therefore accounting for all losses in the transmission chain, is examined. A novel two-channel multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna for handset terminals is proposed. The antenna is basically composed of two folded monopoles and is designed to operate in WiBro (Wireless Broadband Internet; the Korean version of mobile WiMax) service band, 2.30–2.39 GHz. To decrease mutual coupling between the antennas, ground wall and connecting line are added. Good impedance matching and enhanced isolation performances are observed. A small-sized (radiator ≃10×8 mm) microstrip monopole antenna for reconfigurable macro-micro frequency tuning is presented. The proposed antenna operates in WiBro (2.3–2.4 GHz) and WLAN 802.11a/b (2.4–2.48 GHz/5.15–5.35 GHz) service bands with a constant antenna gain. Two frequency tuning diodes, a pin diode and a varactor, are incorporated into a meander type radiator. The pin diode is used for frequency switching (macro-tuning) between 2 GHz band and 5 GHz band. In addition, the varactor is used for frequency tuning (micro-tuning) within wireless service bands (2.3–2.48 GHz and 5.15–5.35 GHz) to produce constant antenna gain.

The development of a glucose biosensor based on co-immobilisation of oxygen (O2) responsive luminophore and glucose oxidase (GOx) within nanoporous solgel-derived xerogels is described. The biosensor operates in the frequency domain and exploits the effect of glucose and O2 consumption by GOx on the luminophore excited-state lifetime (i.e. phase angle). The biosensor consists of a modulated light emitting diode as the excitation source and a silicon photodiode as the detector. This sensing methodology establishes the viability for low-cost and accurate biosensors that operate at a low modulation frequency (tens of kHz). The biosensor is stable, reproducible, and provides an analytically reliable response from 0.5 to 15 mM glucose.

A twin-hole optical fibre with the fibre core located at the centre of the two holes was thermally poled to induce second-order nonlinearity (SON) in the core. The SON spatial distribution was measured with second-harmonic microscopy. It was found that the SON was distributed in a narrow layer, which moved towards the cathode for longer poling time. The whole fibre core became second-harmonic active after the SON layer had reached the core–cladding interface with a maximum value of 0.26 pm/V induced under a poling condition of 3.5 kV, 320°C and 40 min. - Author(s): R.E. For the first time a link is shown between the time to failure, the initial equilibrium temperature and high-power damage coating degradation at failure. A fibre that is sensitive to high-power damage has been observed to have a low equilibrium temperature and a coating that is sensitive to thermal ageing.

An adaptive linear image interpolation method based on the least-squares technique is proposed. A fast partial distortion search motion estimation algorithm based on search centre prediction is proposed. A search centre prediction scheme is first exploited and, based on it, two schemes of reducing computation complexity are presented, including early search termination and halfway search stop. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve from 14 to 161 times speedup compared to the full search algorithm, while maintaining similar visual quality.

An improved phase-encoding channel is presented, where the phase relationship through which the data is recovered is considered between two lines with opposite polarity. This improves the reliability of the link by preserving the delay between the lines. A compact and low-loss Y-branch splitter is designed made with a high refractive-index difference waveguide and using the authors' wavefront matching method. The splitter was then fabricated using silica-based planar lightwave circuit technology. Excess loss was less than 0.2 dB per branch over a wide wavelength range of 1250 to 1650 nm.

A laser diode array line narrowing using an external cavity with a holographic grating is demonstrated. Dynamic measurements of the Henry factor αH of InAs/GaAs Fabry-Pérot lasers are compared for 3-, 5- and 10-QD layers. A widely tunable laser, consisting of a 100 GHz FSR triple-ring resonator and a semiconductor optical amplifier, is presented. The 100 GHz FSR ring resonator makes it possible to demonstrate 96 nm wavelength tuning with stable single-mode operation produced by a large threshold gain difference.

This experimental investigation reveals a new mechanism for controlling microwave transmission in periodically corrugated waveguide. The measurements show that location of the stopband in the frequency spectrum as well as its width depends on the relative position of two corrugated walls. The stopband and hence transmission vary from zero to a maximum value upon shifting of one periodic wall with respect to another on the half period of the corrugation. The results confirm the theoretical prediction of such spectrum transformation. Based on the open-circuited slotline to realise capacitive compensation, a microstrip directional coupler with high isolation is investigated. Meanwhile, by adding external matching networks at the input/output ports, bandwidth is enhanced and a flat coupling is obtained. Centred at 2.4 GHz, a 3 dB directional coupler is designed, fabricated and examined. Both simulated results and measured data are presented, and good agreement between them is observed.

Eigen-beamforming is capable of providing attractive performance gains in the context of multiple-input multiple-output systems, provided accurate channel state information (CSI) is available. However, when a realistic pilot-based channel predictor is used for acquiring the CSI, a significant performance degradation may be imposed by the phase-ambiguity inherent in the estimated eigen-vectors. Sophisticated differentially encoded coded modulation (CM) schemes are amalgamated with the eigen-beamformer, when employing a minimum mean square error based pilot-assisted channel predictor for avoiding the performance degradation imposed by outdated channel estimation. Thirty-seven binary cyclic codes with minimum distance higher than those of the best linear codes given in Brouwer's table are presented. Among these new cyclic codes is the quadratic residue code of length 199, for which is provided an answer to the long-open question regarding its minimum distance. Four new binary linear codes are also obtained by applying Construction X and Construction Y1 to those new cyclic codes. Overall, after taking into account the extended, punctured and shortened codes, there are 869 binary linear codes which are improvements to Brouwer's lower-bound.

Highly oxygen-rich SiOx thin films were prepared using a helicon plasma activated reactive evaporation technique. A small second-order optical nonlinearity was observed in the as-grown films, and thermal poling induced nonlinearity in the films was found to be much larger than that in stoichiometric SiO2 films. These phenomena were associated with the non-impurity defects in the oxygen-rich films.

Transmitter-based equalisation is investigated for enhanced performance in 10 Gbit/s multimode-fibre links. Rigorous statistical modelling confirms, for the first time, the potential superiority of the technique relative to receiver-based schemes. A novel frequency-doubling optoelectronic-oscillator technique utilising the wavelength dependence of the half-wave voltage of a Mach-Zehnder electro-optic modulator is presented. Two wavelengths (1310 and 1550 nm) corresponding to the quadrature and null-transmission bias settings are used to pump the oscillator and to simultaneously generate self-starting 10 and 20 GHz signals with low-phase-noise properties.

Reported is super-luminescent emission under room-temperature, continuous-wave conditions from GaSb quantum-well-based light emitting diodes (LED), monolithically integrated on Si (100) substrates. The LEDs are realised with substrate growth temperature under 500°C for the entire process and the Si (001) substrate is non-miscut. The lattice mismatch at the AlSb/Si interface is accommodated by interfacial misfit dislocation arrays (IMF) resulting in low defect-density III-Sb material without thick metamorphic buffers. The devices are grown in etched trenches on the Si substrate to reduce anti-phase domains in the III-Sb. The n-Si substrate is contacted directly and thus current flows through the III-Sb/Si IMF interface. The diodes have extremely low leakage current density (Jleakage<0.2 A/cm2) in the reverse bias (−10 V) and show very good diode characteristics but exhibit a slightly elevated forward resistance (R∼ 27 Ω), likely to be because of the IMF. The super-luminal spectra peaks at 2.14 µm with maximum output power ∼0.125 mW.

A simple, fast detection scheme for voltage dip and voltage swell is presented. Applying a simple relay and lowpass filter to the supply voltage signal, an in-phase fixed magnitude reference signal with very low total harmonic distortion can be generated. Comparing the supply signal with the in-phased fixed magnitude reference sinusoid, any change of magnitude in the supply signal can be detected. The detection scheme can indicate voltage dip and voltage swell in less than a quarter of the cycle of oscillation. Experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed detection scheme.

A novel electrochemical etching on silicon is proposed. A pulsed voltage or a pulsed illumination is used to make a pulsed anodic current that produces a magnetic field around the anodic current path. The Lorentz force centralises the hole accumulating path. Disperse pipe trench patterns can then be obtained.

An adaptive system for Voiced/Unvoiced (V/UV) speech detection in the presence of background noise is presented. The results were compared with a non-adaptive classification system and the V/UV detectors adopted by three important speech coding standards: LPC10, ITU-T G. 723.1 and ETSI AMR. Presented is an accurate speech detection algorithm based on a jointly Gaussian probability distribution function (jGpdf) and a likelihood ratio test evaluated on a new observation model for the input speech. A more realistic description of the dependence between observations in a classical statistical binary framework (H0&H1) provides higher discrimination in speech endpoint detection and reports benefits over a number of recently published methods.
