Theoretical results are presented for the small-signal microwave conductivity of nInSb at TL = 77°K in the presence of a high d.c. field directed parallel or perpendicular to the microwave field. Reasonable agreement with experiments by Richter and Bonek is demonstrated. At frequencies below 50GHz, the parallel microwave conductivity is smaller than the perpendicular one, whereas the opposite is true at 70GHz.

An amplifier has been built using the chopper technique suggested by Baxandall. A low-frequency noise figure of 6dB has been obtained, but in the region of 1 Hz upwards, a simple bipolar or f.e.t. circuit will give a better performance.

On considering multipole sources, the effect of pattern variation at an edge is evaluated and applied to determine the correction for an edge illuminated at a shadow boundary.

The letter considers improvements in efficiency to be expected from varying the area or donor-density profile of a Gunn device. A method is given to design a diode theoretically capable of efficiencies approaching 40% for the best-quality GaAs with a peak/valley ratio approaching 3.

An expression for the sum of the sensitivities of a network function with respect to the network components is derived. This is shown to be directly related to the network function in certain cases.

It is proved that an infinite-gain controlled source (of any type) is equivalent to a nullor. On using this equivalence, two new gyrator circuits, using operational amplifiers, are realised.

An amplifier modified by a parallel feedback network is discussed. Explicit solutions of the circuit equations can be used to obtain the required behaviour of the elements of the feedback network.

Using Neimark's result, Poincare's index is defined for different types of double points of an autonomous second-order recurrence, in the absence of a critical case. A necessary condition is given for the existence of a closed trajectory surrounding a number of double points.

Increasing the drain current of an f.e.t. can result in an improvement of the noise performance at medium frequencies, but, owing to changes in the noise spectrum of the device, a deterioration of the low-frequency noise performance can result. Measurements in the frequency range 1 Hz–1 kHz on some low-noise samples of f.e.t.s show that the drain current is not critical up to a limit, but, above this limit, the noise performance below 10 Hz deteriorates rapidly.

The current waves on the outside wall of an infinite cylindrical antenna, fed by a delta-function generator and immersed in a warm isotropic plasma, which is in direct contact with the antenna, is separated into its components: the familiar e.m. wave, the ‘transverse-plasma’ wave and the slow surface wave.

The letter relates to the substitution of e.m. circuit elements by transducers and, for example, sound-wave delay elements. Experimental and theoretical considerations suggest, however, that, with surface (sound)-wave elements, reradiation into the air can augment substantially the attenuation already existing owing to internal friction and scattering.
