The dynamic behaviour of some parts of a process can be relatively easily used as part of a process model (the initial process model). Small perturbations are applied to the process input, and the initial process model can be updated by a learning procedure to give an updated process model, which should accurately match the process.

Self-sustained discharges, similar in mechanism to hollow-cathode discharges, have been seen at mercury vapour pressures down to 1 mtorr if initial ionisation is produced from an auxiliary discharge. Measurements of microwave emission point to a beam-plasma interaction mechanism.

It is commonly assumed that the skin effect is the cause of an increase in the series resistance of a semiconductor diode at microwave frequencies. This letter presents some simple theoretical calculations which show that the validity of such an assumption is highly doubtful.

A standard photographic film was proved to be applicable to a quick and easy direct mapping of an electromagnetic field. The method utilises selective development of the film in accordance with the thermo-image produced by the electromagnetic field. The method would be most useful for preparing microwave holograms.

The practical applicability of the cascade synthesis of distributed-RC networks is limited by the ratio of maximum and minimum capacitance or resistance of individual cascade sections. A modification of this method, which minimises the mentioned ratio and is therefore more useful for practical design, is described here.

The letter extends an earlier contribution, showing that, in curved as in straight waveguides, the modes can be described meaningfully in ray-optical terms, and that characteristic caustic surfaces play a significant role in generating the modal-ray system.

A method is proposed which may permit extensive adaptive structures to be fabricated from large-scale integrated circuits. The method involves using the gate charge of an m.o.s.t. as an analogue memory element and changing its magnitude by ionisation. Some initial experimental results for a single device are quoted.

In this letter, the authors pose an interesting area of study which, it is felt, will lead to a clarification of the relationship between network theory and system theory. Specifically, it is proposed that a formal study be made of networks of RLC components characterised by difference relations rather than differential relations. The main contribution is a set of definitions which preserve stability, passivity and other energy relations in the discrete-time case and which pass to the continuous time relations as the step size becomes small. The formalism introduced shows promise of providing a foundation for digital-computer network simulators.

Several operation modes may exist in a mutually synchronised system owing to the periodicity of the phase comparators employed. In order to avoid a situation like this, analyses of operation modes are given, assuming the sawtooth characteristics for the phase comparators.
