The blocking efficiency of a Cassegrain antenna system can be improved considerably by shaping the main and the subreflector in such a way that the power, which is normally lost by scattering against the blocking obstacles, arrives at the aperture in the correct phase and direction and with the correct amplitude. It is explained that shadows of (nearly) spherical waves on the aperture can be made to disappear entirely. A practical example is described.

The object of the letter is to find a unique function of n which represents the inverse z transform of unity (1) in the analysis of a finite-state Markov process. The function of n is found to be the sum of two ordinary step functions. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a one in the z domain in the analysis of a Markov process are determined. Using the necessary and sufficient conditions, the various configurations of the Markov process in which this situation exists are investigated.

A novel mode of operation of a reluctance motor is described. The motor combines the advantageous feature of a one-piece lamination, usual with conventional salient-pole designs, and an improved synchronous performance approaching that of the newer segmented-rotor designs. Pull-in performance is good, particularly with high inertias.

Critical reflection from an elevated tropospheric layer is considered from the standpoint of mode theory. It is suggested that the usually neglected whispering-gallery modes could contribute to the total field in transhorizon tropospheric propagation of microwaves.

It is shown that, for delay ratios less than √ε1 (where ε1 is the transverse component of the equivalent permittivity tensor), the forward-wave plasma-guide mode on a longitudinally magnetised plasma column changes its field distribution from that of a bulk wave to one typical for surface waves.

Theoretical results are reported for intensity fluctuations arising from coherent photon-phonon interactions. Such interactions may occur, for example, in optoacoustic transducers with coherent input, as well as in parametric amplification and frequency-conversion systems.

At its fundamental resonant frequency, a shunt-switched N-path filter is similar to an LCR resonant circuit, except that the selectivity or Q factor achievable, which is a direct function of the passive components employed, may be very much better than normally available in tuned circuits. The limit on the maximum attainable Q factor is shown to depend on the impedance of the shunt arm switches and filter load, as well as the speed of the switches.

A recent letter described how the near-field discrimination of a radar or sonar could be improved by the use of multiplicative signal processing. This letter shows that similar improvements can be obtained by the use of a much simpler technique employing separate transmitting and receiving arrays.

A 3-port unit that satisfies the requirements of the circulator concept is realised with a differential-input operational amplifier. It provides, between two of its ports, a direct measure of reflection coefficient at the third port. One unit may be employed as a hybrid transformer; two or more units may be connected in a ring to form an n-port circulator.
