A simple error-correcting code for optical-fibre transmission systems is proposed, and its correcting principle is explained. This code offers the same advantages as the CMI code, which is widely used in optical-fibre transmission systems. Moreover it has the ability to correct a single error in a block. Owing to this ability, the maximum repeater space can be increased.

We describe a tunable, single-frequency, narrow-line external-cavity laser that can be FSK up to 100Mbit/s by modulating the laser current. The result is obtained by using a two-section laser: one section for lasing and the other for FSK modulation.

Polarisation fluctuation in optical-fibre submarine cable under 8000 m deep sea environmental conditions (hydraulic pressure of 80 MPa, tensile force of 50 kN and temperature of 3°C) are presented. It is found that the frequency spectrum of polarisation fluctuation is less than about 2 kHz in dynamic stress conditions.

A new method of estimating the coupling coefficient of DFB lasers is proposed. A sub/main-mode spectral intensity ratio below the threshold current is employed in this method, instead of the stop-bandwidth used in the conventional method. It is demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally that the new method is capable of more accurate determination of the coupling coefficient of DFB lasers with phase-shifted corrugations.

The stability of optical fibre connectors with spherically convex-polished ferrule ends is discussed analytically and experimentally. It is clarified that Fresnel reflections at the gap between the butted fibre ends are reduced by applying axial compressive force sufficient to deform the ferrule ends.

A self-aligned GaAs gate heterojunction enhancement-mode SISFET with a layer structure of n+-GaAs/undoped Al0.5Ga0.5As/undoped GaAs is fabricated and shows a high transconductance and a low threshold voltage. The highest transconductance at both room temperature and at 77 K ever reported on a long-channel GaAs gate SISFET, 197 mS/mm and 313 mS/mm, respectively, is obtained.

Birefringent filter synthesis techniques are demonstrated to achieve very flat channel passbands for wavelength-division multiplexers. The crystal thickness and birefringence can be used to scale a given design to very small channel separations, limited primarily by the spectra of the lasers and their drift. Experimental results are reported, with typical optical crosstalk values of –19 dB.

A novel contacting technique is described which results in very stable and reproducible diode parameters which allow cooling to low temperatures, and which can withstand typical space qualifying tests. Such mixers are currently used for remote sensing and radioastronomy. The results of subharmonically pumped mixers, using the described contacting method, in the frequency range 50–200GHz are also given.

Simulations and scale-model experiments indicate that shock-wave formation on a GaAs integrated circuit nonlinear transmission line will generate electrical pulses with rise times less than 5 ps, and that velocity modulation on the line will permit broadband phase modulation from DC to 40 GHz.

In the letter we present a new clock recovery circuit with self-correction of the position of the retiming clock, which shows the reduction of the output jitter by deleting the phase difference of π radians in the output of the phase detector existing in Hogge's scheme.

A criterion for the local taper angle of a low-loss single-mode fibre coupler is established by considering the dominant mode coupling in the coupler taper. Effects due to structure parameters, such as cladding/core thickness ratio, corecladding index difference and core separation, are investigated. It is found that the criterion for the coupler taper can be well approximated by that for the single-mode fibre taper with the same structure parameters.

Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy is used to determine the structure of Au-, Ge- and Ni-based ohmic contacts at the interface with AlGaAs/GaAs modulation-doped field-effect-transistor material. Significant lateral diffusion (̃0.12μm) is found to occur at the edge of the contact during alloying. The observed contact structure places a limit on minimum geometries and must be taken into account if accurate device modelling is to be carried out.

A dual sinusoidal modulation scheme introducing directional sensing of a laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) employing a semiconductor laser source is described. With this technique using direct current modulation a single-sideband Doppler shift of 8.5 MHz with an image sideband suppression of 29dB is demonstrated.

The preliminary results on the preparation and investigation of the two-layer fibres with the core and cladding from thallium halide (TlBr-TlCl) and caesium halide (CsBr-CsCl) single crystals are discussed. A considerable reduction of optical losses in the waveguides with cladding and coating in comparison with the unclad fibres is shown.

Nonreciprocal phase-shifting and magnetically controlled cutoff experienced by the dominant TM01 mode in an azimuthally magnetised millimetre-wave solid-plasma circular guide are explored and interpreted. Based on these effects possible constructions of solid-plasma control components for millimetre frequencies are proposed and substantiated.

The letter discusses the novel bistability which is experimentally observed in the tuning characteristic of a tandemelectrode laser diode (TE-LD). Using this tuning characteristic, inverter and inverted-output flip-flop operations are demonstrated between the source LD driving current and the TE-LD optical output. The tuning characteristic is applicable to optical logic devices having the inverter function.

We have fabricated a new GaAlAs/GaAs surface-emitting laser diode with lateral pumping structure. With this structure, the thickness of the active layer can be increased beyond the electron diffusion length, and also both current and light confinement can be incorporated. The lowest threshold current was 180 mA. The far-field pattern shows stable double lobes with an FWHM of 39°. By reducing the size of the mesa, making the wall of the mesa vertical and using the GaAlAs/GaAs quarter-wave stack for the mirror, further improvement can be expected.

System performance as a function of local oscillator power and the associated intensity noise is analysed. A strategy for the realisation of a product-modulation frequency conversion technique is presented. For maximum efficiency and spectral purity, a pulse-width modulation (PWM) circuit is used. The addition of pulse-width-modulated signals from the three input phases to each of the three output phases is accomplished by time-division multiplexing (TDM). The need for the product modulator to accommodate multiplication by negative numbers is eliminated by a modification to the basic equations.

The letter describes the development of a long-length and large-diameter preform for polarisation-maintaining optical fibres. The preform was 470 mm in length and 48 mm in diameter. As a result, a 26 km-long PANDA fibre is developed. This fibre achieves crosstalk of –22 dB, corresponding to h = 2.4 × 10-7m-1 and a transmission loss of 0.3 dB/km at a wavelength of 1.56 μm. These fibres will be useful for future high-speed and medium-span coherent optical communications.

Robust detectors must be designed to obtain a constant probability of false alarm in an unknown clutter environment. A change to a standard ‘greatest-of’ detector is proposed to adapt the threshold according to an estimated clutter shape factor. Results are presented for both Weibull and log-normal assumptions.

The focused-ion-beam micromachining of an output coupler and a 45° turning mirror to form a surface-emitting, 10-element, phase-locked array of diode lasers is described. 330 mW optical power was emitted at the turning mirror in pulsed operation.

We describe a new iterative method to design two-dimensional linear-phase FIR filters with arbitrary magnitude characteristic. The procedure is simple and can be used easily in designing filters of large order. This method is based on the use of the method of projection on to convex sets and can be implemented using the FFT algorithm.

A simple analytic method of extracting both the modulus and phase of the CPR from the asymmetric modulated intensity spectrum has been applied to a GaAlAs channelled-substrate-planar (CSP) laser. Knowledge of the phase is extremely useful for modelling laser dynamics. In particular, our results show a marked phase shift which appears consistent with a nonuniform lateral carrier distribution in the CSP laser.

A circular buried microcavity 7 μm long and 6 μm in diameter has been realised. We obtained Ith = 6mA, ηd = 9% and peak power ≥1 mW at 20.5°C at single mode. The first CW operation of a GaAlAs/GaAs surface-emitting laser with Ith = 4.5 mA at 77 K was also realised.
