An online measurement method using an optical rotary connector is proposed for continuously monitoring optical fibre loss characteristics during manufacture. This method provides a complete transmission loss spectrum and OTDR measurements of optical fibres during the drawing process. The results coincide with corresponding offline cutback measurements to better than ±0.2 dB/km.

A tunable pulsed UV laser holographic system is described which has the capability for ease of fabrication of multiplexed laser arrays, chirped gratings and millimetre-long distributed feedback lasers. First-order optoelectronic gratings (periods of approximately 2500 Å) have been produced over the entire surface of 2 in (50.8 mm) InP substrate wafers. Diffraction efficiencies above 90% and grating depths of 1400 Å are reported.

A new method of detecting the difference signal in currently proposed stereophonic systems has been presented. The method utilises the feedback technique described by an implicit function which eliminates the need to apply high gain in the feedback loop. Applications of the implicit approach in the CQAM/Motorola AM stereo decoder and the FMX/CBS FM stereo decoder are provided.

Switching of a radiation beam of a semiconductor laser in the direction perpendicular to the active layers is realised. The laser has two active layers which are controlled individually and are optically coupled to each other. The far-field peak moves vertically from −2° (downward) to 10° (upward) off the facet normal. An analysis of the beam deflection is also given.

In designing SAW dispersive delay lines (DDLs), one usually applies dispersive interdigital transducers with electrode spacing varying according to the frequency-delay time relation of the delay line impulse response. A new method is proposed in the letter, in which a DDL is treated as a bandpass filter with a nonlinear phase response. Such a filter can be synthesised with an IDT having periodic electrodes with apodisation. The experimental result is −40 dB of sidelobe level obtained in a system of two DDLs, one of which is Hamming-weighted.

A short-range microwave holographic technique for the measurement of reflector antenna surface profile is described. The technique uses a linearly scanned transmit/receive CW probe located on-axis at approximately two focal lengths from the reflector vertex. Rotation of the reflector provides a plane-polar data set which can be reconstructed by a fast algorithm to provide a surface profile error map. No special precautions are required with regard to the reflectivity of the environment. Practical results are provided to illustrate the performance of the system.

Under modified operating conditions, a CCD imager arrangement is used as a hybrid optoelectronic transversal filter. The principles are explained and an example of application is provided. The oscillation frequency shift of a GaAlAs diode laser under a magnetic field at room temperature is reported. In this experiment the observed frequency shift is 500 MHz to the low-frequency side at the magnetic flux density of 1.4 T, and shows the quadratic dependence on the magnetic flux density.

We show that the broadening of LED pulses in single-mode fibres due to higher-order dispersive effects, which are significant near the wavelength of zero dispersion, is considerably less than that predicted on the basis of RMS theory.

We first demonstrate an integrated-optic device for a fibre laser Doppler velocimeter, which consists of a waveguide interferometer and a frequency shifter in z-propagation Ti-diffused LiNbO3. The device is also pigtailed with a single-mode fibre to pick up a Doppler-shifted signal. Using the fabricated device, the velocity of a moving object was successfully heterodyne-detected with a signal/noise ratio of 30dB.

Slow-wave propagation along fin-lines with periodic-loaded stubs has been investigated by means of both a transmission-line experimental procedure and a three-dimensional spectral domain approach with modal spectra in the guided direction. The letter describes an electromagnetic humidity sensor based on a resonance perturbation technique. The proposed sensor is capable of measuring humidity over a wide dynamic range in an industrial environment and is insensitive to dust, dirt, oil vapours etc. The all-metal construction of the sensor makes it immune to damage by high temperature. The sensor signal processing circuit provides a time-dependent signal which can be directly applied to any modern computerised control systems.

The fabrication and operation of an Nd3+-doped silica single-mode fibre laser using a distributed fibre grating as the feedback element is reported. The laser had a threshold of less than 2mW, a slope efficiency of 19% and an output bandwidth at the lasing wavelength of 1.084μm of 16 GHz, significantly narrower than the conventional cavity design.

Time-division 4:1 multiplexing and 1:4 demultiplexing as well as signal regeneration are important functions in high-speed optical fibre transmission systems. A preform dimension control technique in the VAD process has been developed using chemical dry etching with fluoride gas applied to silica glass particles in an oxyhydrogen flame. Wholly synthesised VAD single-mode fibre preforms have been fabricated using this technique with high adjustment accuracy of outer/core diameter ratio. These preforms have exhibited excellent structural characteristics.

GaInAsSb/AlGaAsSb injection lasers have been fabricated with increased Al concentration in the cladding layers. As a result of improved optical and electrical confinement, the threshold current density Jth for these double heterostructures was a factor of two lower than reported previously; CW operation was achieved up to 235 K.

A technique is presented for automatically tuning integrated-circuit active RC filters. The control circuit uses a combination of digital and switched-capacitor techniques and is suitable for implementation in MOS technology. Simulated performance for an 80kHz third-order lowpass filter is given and indicates that the degradation of linearity due to the tuning technique is minimal.

Low-pressure vapour-phase epitaxy (LPVPE) was applied to fabricate multilayer structures like camel diodes. Using in situ doping and selective growth, camel diodes with good ideality factors (1.08–1.2) and low generation-recombination currents were realised.

An adequate model of a nonideal op-amp operating in a two-op-amp SC biquad is derived. The model leads to an equivalent SC circuit containing ideal components. Substitution of any op-amp in an SC biquad by its equivalent SC circuit allows the exact frequency response of the biquad to be found easily, taking into account the finite DC gain and bandwidth of op-amps.

We report the design and operation of a wideband adaptive filter which uses a 350-tap SAW/FET programmable transversal filter. The SAW/FET device incorporates surface-acoustic-wave (SAW) signal propagation in conjunction with a field-effect-transistor (FET)-controlled sampling array. The adaptive processor uses a digital computer to calculate the tap-weight updates and achieves up to 25 dB of adaptive CW cancellation.

Bosma's method of analysing stripline circulator operation is modified to suit circulators using coplanar waveguide. One of the circulators designed in this way shows a maximum isolation of 19.1 dB, insertion loss 0.8 dB and VSWR 1.3 or less at a centre frequency of 9.56 GHz.

A laboratory ten-channel coherent fibre-optic broadband transmission system is reported. The frequency-division-multiplexed optical carriers are separated by 6 GHz and are demultiplexed by a tunable heterodyne receiver having a sensitivity of -46 dBm at a bit error rate of 10-9. A modified Schottky injection field effect transistor (SINFET) which offers lower on-resistance and a switching speed comparable to conventional n-channel LDMOSTs is described. The fabrication process is similar to that of an LDMOS transistor but with the high-low (n+n-) ‘ohmic’ contact at the drain replaced by a parallel combination of a Schottky barrier and a pn junction diode. This hybrid anode injects minority carriers into the n- drift region, which in turn provides conductivity modulation. A current handling capability 3.5 times larger than that of the LDMOST is achieved. With the minority carrier injection level limited by the Schottky barrier, the total amount of minority carriers injected by the hybrid anode is much lower than that injected by the pn junction diode alone. Thus, the device speed is comparable to the conventional n-channel LDMOST. By minimising the shunting resistance in the p-channel region, devices with a latch-up current density of 400 A/cm2 are obtained.

A simple and efficient approach to compute the input impedance and current distribution on a wire parallel to an infinitely long, perfectly conducting circular cylinder is presented. It consists of solving for the wire above an infinite ground plane using standard thin-wire moment method (MM) procedures, but appropriately modifying the field due to the image segments by a geometrical constant. Comparison with measurements shows the validity of the technique, which can be easily implemented in any MM code.

Spontaneous backward Brillouin scattering is demonstrated to be a sensitive probe of fibre characteristics using a heterodyne detection technique. Relative differences in GeO2 concentration from fibre to fibre as small as 0.01% can be detected.

The effect of aging on silicone-coated optical fibres in various pH solutions is considered. A change of strength and stress corrosion susceptibility n has been found to occur in the pH region from 6 to 10. Aging for 2 yr in distilled water (pH = 6) has not changed the strength or the n parameter of the fibres investigated.

Three InP MISFETs have been monolithically integrated on an Fe-doped semi-insulating InP substrate in conjunction with three integrated load resistors forming an inverter. The epitaxial layers have been grown by chloride vapour-phase epitaxy. The MISFETs exhibit transconductances as high as 200 mS/mm for a gate length of 1 μm. The circuit consists of one MISFET that is operated as a one transistor-inverter stage in isolation and a two-stage inverter whose output is connected to the gate of an FET. For two-stage inverters we have obtained typical high- and low-level noise margins of 0.4 and 0.3 V at a bias level of 1.5 V.

It is shown that by connecting in series two fibre-optic filter bundles containing n and m fibres, respectively, the overall response can be equivalent to that of one filter bundle containing n × m fibres, rather than n + m. An original implementation of the well known chirp Fourier transform algorithm is introduced, capable of providing real-time spectral analysis of large-bandwidth signals by means of a single SAW dispersive filter in place of the two filters usually required. The technique has been applied in a range-Doppler system, where the reduction of complexity and cost makes the adoption of the analogue processing unit competitive with respect to alternative approaches. Continuous metal/glass fibre polarisers incorporating Ga or In/Sn alloy have been fabricated. An extinction ratio of greater than 37 dB with an insertion loss of less than 1 dB can be obtained over a 250 nm spectral window around 1300 nm. Extinction ratios as high as 52 dB have been measured at 830 nm.

The properties of index-guided lasers containing a lateral mode filter section are investigated both experimentally and theoretically. A beam propagation method (BPM) analysis gives a new explanation of the mode filtering properties of this structure, in which several higher-order local modes are excited at the abrupt interface between laser and mode filter. This results in a longitudinal interference pattern and asymmetric far fields, as observed experimentally.

AlGaAs/GaAs distributed feedback (DFB) lasers with a ridge waveguide structure emitting at 0.88 μm were fabricated by normal-pressure metalorganic chemical vapour deposition (MOCVD). The DFB lasers have a low threshold current around 55 mA at room temperature and can be operated stably in a single longitudinal mode up to 40°C.

The temporal response of periodic and nonperiodic phase-reversal integrated-optic travelling-wave modulators is derived for the lossless and lossy cases. Improved repetition rates are obtained by using nonperiodic structures. For all structures considered the highest usable repetition rate is much greater in the intensity modulation regime (using a Mach-Zehnder) than in the phase modulation regime.

The slotted ALOHA protocol is modified to accommodate stations with multiple directional antennas in a multihop packet radio network environment. The one-hop throughput is derived for both the Poisson station distribution and the deterministic lattice station distribution. Numerical results show that the throughput values are very close for the two distributions. If the number of stations in the transmission circle is fairly large, say 50, the throughput gain using directional antennas could be as large as the number of directional antennas used.

We describe a model for polarisation dispersion in single-mode fibres of arbitrary length and configuration that is based on the existence of principal states of polarisation. These are two orthogonal input states of polarisation whose corresponding output states exhibit zero dispersion in their state of polarisation to first order.

During the erasure of a photorefractive grating in Bi12SiO20, the space-charge field moves at a constant velocity and its amplitude exponentially decays. The experiment confirms that the diffracted beam is frequency-shifted and the amount of frequency shift is equal to that required for optimum beam coupling in nearly degenerate two-wave mixing.
