Transmission characteristics for a 400 Mbit/s signal over a 104 km single-mode fibre are reported. A DFB laser diode is restricted to a single longitudinal mode at 1.53 μm. No degradation is observed in the error-rate performance at a low loss and a finite dispersion wavelength.

Sarje and Biswas have developed an algorithm for generating pairs of minterms forming a given 2-sum. In the letter this procedure has been generalised for obtaining k-summable k-tuples. This simple process for generating k-summable k-tuples basically requires generation of 2-summable pairs. Having obtained these k-tuples, it is a trivial matter to test k-asummability of switching functions.

A new model of the ohmic contact to n-GaAs is proposed. It assumes that the contact resistance is due to the n+/n-barrier between the contact region (n+) and the semiconductor bulk (n = ND) as long as the bulk concentration is smaller than the effective density of states. Then the contact resistance is inversely proportional to the dopant concentration.

A forward Raman gain of 2.9 dB has been measured in a 1.1 km low-loss fibre using an LED at 1.118 μm as a signal source and a CW Nd: YAG laser as a pump. Backward Brillouin scattering, which depletes the pump power towards the end of the fibre, is found to enhance the Raman gain at the front end.

Submarine optical-fibre cable design considering low elongation under tension is proposed. Submarine cable using aluminium pressure resistant pipe according to this design can decrease the cable elongation under laying and recovery, and can be used even in deep sea up to a depth of 5000 m.

The optical response time of an InGaAs/InP heterostructure avalanche photodiode (HAPD) with InGaAsP buffer layers is reported. It is shown that the buffer layers play an important role in reduction of the pile-up effect and are considered to be effective in achieving high-speed InGaAs/InP HAPDs.

Time delays of the differently orientated LP11 modes in elliptical-core fibres have been measured in dependence on the wavelength. These measurements permit one to determine the orientation-dependent effective cutoff wavelengths. An empirical expression relating LP11-mode delay splitting due to slight ellipticity and LP01-mode chromatic dispersion is obtained.

The experimental optical-fibre submarine cable system with 50 km cable and two repeaters was successfully laid in early June 1982. Optical loss changes of the cable during laying were less than 0.003 dB/km. The experiment will be continued during two or three years to obtain data on the cable and the repeaters.

An InGaAsP double-channel planar buried-heterostructure laser diode has been developed in which a p-n-p-n current confinement structure effectively reduces the leakage current. High-power operation over 50 mW and high-temperature operation up to 130°C have been attained.

A direct method for measuring surface-acoustic-wave attenuation using the scanning acoustic microscope is presented. The use of an annular lens excludes the longitudinal wave component from a normal V(z) measurement, and so an interference-free measurement of surface-wave attenuation alone is possible. Simple corrections compensate for both absorption in the coupling fluid as well as variations in the critical angle.

A method of analysis for strip gratings with more than one conducting strip per period is given. The method is then applied to a periodic twin-strip grating with two unequal gaps. The scattering parameters are found from a set of linear equations which may be solved numerically.

Optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) at a wavelength of 1.55 μm using a semiconductor laser source is reported for the first time. The apparatus uses a PINFET optical receiver and can detect the Rayleigh scatter signal over 30 km of single-mode fibre installed in duct.

Interpolative cubic splines are considered for real-time D/A conversion applications. Four methods are examined that evaluate the derivatives at the end-points of the interval. The performance evaluation of these methods is based on both a mean-square-error criterion and a figure of merit which considers hardware complexity.

Fused biconical taper fibre couplers have been fabricated from single-polarisation single-mode fibres. A CVD technique is applied to permit maintenance of parallel alignment of the fibres in the coupler fabrication process. The couplers can hold linear polarisation along the principal axis of the fibre branches, showing an extinction ratio of about −15dB.

We report the first experimental investigation of the effect of laser-diode phase noise on the error-rate performance in a PSK heterodyne differential detection fibre communication experiment. A newly designed AlGaAs laser emitter with adjustable linewidth is used as both the signal carrier and the local oscillator. Error rate is measured for 25 Mbit/s and 50 Mbit/s signals at an intermediate frequency of 250 MHz, and a BER (bit error rate) of 10−10 has been achieved.

A general synthesis method is given for the realisation of nth-order voltage transfer functions in the z-domain by active SC (switched-capacitor) networks using only biphased switches, capacitors and ideal operational amplifiers. The method presented is based on signal-flow graphs and the resulting networks are completely insensitive to stray capacitances.

Observations of electrically and acoustically induced crosstalk in LiNbO3 waveguide phase modulators at λ = 0.633 μm are reported. In the tested device, crosstalk attenuation was as low as 23 dB at 700 MHz and 29 dB at 22.83 MHz, which is caused by RF electromagnetic field coupling and by acoustical coupling, respectively, Crosstalk measurements are made as a function of frequency in the electrical and optical domain.

A negative current mirror suitable for monolithic IC fabrication is described. It is unusual in that it is a ‘voltage-following’ circuit in which the input-output offset voltage is small and only weakly dependent on operating conditions. A base-current compensation scheme enables the circuit to exhibit a current transfer ratio comparable with that of the ‘Wilson’ current mirror.

A new local monitoring system with a 1.5 μm LD is proposed, utilising fibre bending just behind the splice. By the use of index-matching fluid completely evaporated by arc-discharge, splice loss and strength of splice point are not degraded, and, furthermore, the splice loss can be estimated with a precision of ± 0.01 dB.

A differential phase contrast optical microscope is described showing a depth resolution of 1 Å, in a bandwidth of 10 kHz. The system, which is based on a laser interferometer, has a phase sensitivity of 10−3 rad. With careful design, this value can be improved by an order of magnitude.

We present in the letter the results of a new optimisation technique leading to the determination of optimum pulse shapes used in MSK-type signals. A new type of substrate-edge excited GaAs microstrip switch for high-speed optoelectronic microwave switching is reported. The letter is an attempt to generalise the advantageous features of Fermat number transforms to match the word length of the modulus of the NTT to the desired dynamic range of the convolution.
