The probability distributions of the amplitude scintillations on 36 GHz and 55 GHz millimetre wave links along a 4.1 km path across central London have been obtained. These show that the log-normal distribution applies for the case of 36 GHz, but for 55 GHz, on the side of the oxygen absorption peak, the distribution departs significantly from log-normal.

A new principle of signal amplification is experimentally demonstrated which is based on the effect of modulation of conductivity of a semiconductor due to bunching of electrons by the acoustic wave. For the layered structure LiNbO3-CdSe good agreement between theory and experiment is obtained.

The use of electromagnetic waves for the recognition of a structure represented by point scatterers is a fundamental problem. Much research is done on this subject, and the study of aircraft observed in the yaw plane gives interesting results. But to apply these methods it is necessary to use many sophisticated acquisition systems. In the letter, we give a new method which can be applied for plane structures composed of isotropic scatterers. This method is quite interesting because it uses power measurements only and necessitates only a classical tracking radar.

General periods of meteorological conditions which lead to multipath effects on line of sight links can also be those during which anomalous transhorizon propagation is present. An empirical method for predicting the probability of outage due to the resulting interference is described, which is based on the prediction models for the individual multipath and transhorizon effects.

Coupling efficiency between a laser diode and single-mode fibre can be highly increased by using an appropriate intermediate optical element. A simple new method is intended to improve the mode matching of the two elements by chemically etching the fibre end into a self-centred diffracting element. A gain by a factor of 3.5 over classical butt coupling has been obtained.

It is shown that ideally infinite bandmatching in the Roy transformer can be achieved only when the lengths of the two transmission lines are equal. If the lengths of the transmission lines are small as compared to the minimum wavelength of operation, the frequency dependency of the insertion loss of the transformer may be minimised.

A pulsed thermal annealing system is described which rapidly heats samples to 700°C and can successfully activate and regrow arsenic-implanted damaged layers. The junctions so formed are shown to be of low resistivity and exhibit very good diode characteristics. Residual damage seen after the anneal does not appear to degrade the junction performance.

For PLL frequency synthesisers a simple circuit for a deadbeat control strategy is given; with the loop damping removed the initial frequency error is measured over half a cycle of loop oscillation, and then a corrective step of half this is made and the damping replaced.

A scheme for the tuning of filters is proposed. In it, filters are time-shared between a signal path and a tuning path, so that each filter in a system is individually tuned. An accurate system frequency response can thus be achieved which does not rely on tight matching between filters.

The reliability of AuGe/Pt and AuGe/Ni ohmic contacts with and without overlay metal (Ti/Au, Ti/Pt/Au or TiW/Au) has been studied. AuGe/Ni contacts have proved superior and more reliable than AuGe/Pt contacts with or without overlay. AuGe/Pt contacts are stable without overlay but degrade rapidly with overlay. AuGe/Ni contacts exhibit thermal stability after 1000 hours' aging at 250°C.

The need for a reliable, and as near as possible fail-safe, multiprocessing system for on-board automatic train operation has resulted in the development of Cyclone I. A new optical Y-branching circuit using embedded single-mode glass waveguides is presented. The glass waveguides were made by depositing core glass on a silica substrate after forming grooves to contain the core (DS guides). Waveguide transmission loss is 0.6 dB/cm. The loss caused at a branching point is 0.13 dB when the branching angle is 0.3°.

The development and experimental study of a single-mode W-type optical fibre is described. It was found that this type of optical fibre has considerably lower bending and micro-bending losses compared with usual single-mode single-cladding fibres.

A new polarisation-maintaining single-mode fibre having a special class of azimuthally inhomogeneous index profile is proposed. Numerical results indicate that the modal birefringence δβ/k of 10−5 is obtainable for two orthogonal HE11 modes. The value is large enough to maintain the polarisation state. It is also shown that a new deposition process based on the standard MCVD technique is applicable to fabricate the azimuthally inhomogeneous profile.

A planar GaInAs photodetector suitable for the detection of light pulses in the picosecond range is presented. The device investigated exhibits a photocurrent rise time of ∼ 20 ps and an inner gain-bandwidth product of ΓB ∼ 125 GHz. At a wavelength of 820 nm the sensitivity is 3 A/W.

A triggering mechanism, unconnected with carrier transfer effects at long distances, for power commutation of 105–106 W in the subnanosecond range, is believed to have been found from the study of the avalanche breakdown process. A technique for the improvement of signal/crosstalk-noise ratio in local digital transmission is proposed. For subscribers' circuits shorter than some maximum permissible length the transmit levels at both ends of the circuits are reduced. The effect of these changes on intersystem compatibility is also shown to be beneficial.

A novel fabrication method for hemiellipsoidal microlenses formed on fibre ends is proposed, for efficient coupling from laser diodes into single-mode fibres. The method permits the realisation of microlenses with the required ellipticities to match the fields of lasers and fibres. A very low coupling loss of 2.65 dB has been achieved.

A new surface-acoustic-wave mode on GaAs 〈111〉-cut, (110)-direction of propagation is described. This branch is found to be slightly leaky but presents a fair electromechanical coupling coefficient (0.1%) and a rather high velocity (3240 m/s). Excellent agreement between theory and experiment is reported.

A fine metal line with T-shaped cross-sectional form was fabricated by a lift-off technique using the double-layer electron beam resist method. The minimum lower and upper widths of the T-shaped cross-section were 0.2 μm and 0.7 μm, respectively, and, keeping the lower width within 0.3 μm, we could increase the upper width at will.

Long-wavelength back-illuminated PIN photodiodes capable of detecting optical signals at multigigabit modulation rates have been fabricated and tested in a stripline circuit. A transit-time-limited response time of about 30 ps has been realised in a 25 μm-diameter diode.
