The electrical properties of Schottky-barrier and Langmuir-film m.i.s. solar cells fabricated on chemically etched CdTe substrates are reported. The Schottky-barrier devices possess ideality factors close to unity and barrier heights of approximately 0.70 eV. Incorporation of one monolayer of a cadmium stearate Langmuir film between the metal electrode and the semiconductor is found to increase both the effective barrier height of the device measured in the dark and also the open-circuit voltage measured under illumination conditions.

The nature of the output intensity fluctuation noise generated when semiconductor lasers are irradiated by their own output beam are described. A possible explanation of their generation mechanism is presented utilising a simple rate equation model with an additional term accounting for the multiple reflections of the laser beam.

The letter proposes a new star quad structure for symmetrical cable which makes the quad diameter smaller with no loss change and the quad manufacturing processes simpler than conventional star quad structures. The characteristics are also shown of a new specially manufactured trial star quad symmetrical cable.

A flip-chip GaAs power f.e.t. delivering 10 W power output with 3 dB gain has been realised at 10 GHz by using a newly developed internal matching technique, in which the f.e.t. chips are directly connected to the lumped capacitors in the matching networks.

The polarisation properties of the radiation from a double-heterostructure stripe laser have been investigated. The laser has been used as a light source for single-mode optical-fibre experiments. The high linear polarisation of the device above threshold allows a measurement of the Faraday effect to be made.

The orientation dependence of ballistic electron transport in GaAs is investigated using the pseudopotential band structure. It is shown that a single scattering event can permit electron impact-ionisation threshold energies to be reached in the 〈111〉 and 〈100〉 directions. This is in contrast to ballistic calculations, where simple thresholds do not exist in these directions.

Short (1–400 m) multimode fibres were excited by a single-mode fibre. The resulting near-field intensity distributions are generally not circularly symmetric. A calculation based on ray optics shows that slightly elliptical fibres give similar distributions. This calculation assumes a central index-profile dip.

A method of computing and recording a continuous-tone hologram is described in the letter. Certain limitations of binary computer generated holograms, arising from coarse quantisation of amplitude and phase, are overcome in this simple single-step technique.

The suitability of dual-gate GaAs m.e.s.f.e.t.s for pulse shape reconstruction in the Gbit/s range is presented. The properties of these f.e.t.s and the circuitry for reduction of pulse width and pulse slope are both described. The variation of the input/output pulse-width ratio and the time behaviour for fast pulses are shown.

It is shown that the class of controllable and observable interconnected dynamical systems that are amenable to high-gain decentralised control can be characterised in terms of the relatively prime polynomial matrix factors of the transfer-function matrices of the disconnected subsystems. Moreover, this characterisation greatly facilitates the synthesis of high-gain decentralised controllers for such amenable systems.

The use of a Hamilton path within the graph of a network is considered as an aid to printed-circuit board mapping. It is shown that it may not be possible to augment a planar graph so that the resultant graph contains such a path and retains planarity.

A nondestructive technique based on spatial filtering is presented for measuring the refractive-index profile in an optical-fibre preform. The method is simple, accurate and has sufficient resolution to enable detailed profiles of single-mode preforms to be obtained.

A method of locating a single fault in a linear analogue system by determining the consistency of the inaccessible nodal voltage vectors is proposed. It does not require the assumption of an invariable sensitivity matrix, and can thus be applied to catastrophe faults as well.

A new scheme for reducing the numerical complexity of the standard Reed-Solomon (R.S.) encoding algorithm is developed. As an example, the encoding of a (255, 223) R.S. code (NASA standard for concatenation with convolutional codes) is shown to require 75% fewer multiplications and 61% fewer additions than the conventional method of computation.

Primitive polynomials over GF(2) are used for generating maximal-length sequences. Powers of a root α of such a polynomial are delay operators on the generated sequence. Given two primitive polynomials of degree n with α1, and α2 their roots, it is shown which parameter is needed in order to find α1x from α2x without knowledge of x.

A single coefficient block-adaptive predictor is described for encoding of colour television signals. The optimum coefficients were obtained for each block of incoming samples according to the selection of sampling frequency. The results show a reduction in large prediction errors, compared with a nonadaptive predictor, and also improvements in signal/prediction-noise ratio.

A new metal-organic compound, a trimethyl-indium trimethyl-phosphine adduct has been used for the growth of InP epitaxial layers. The formation of unwanted polymer products during epitaxial growth could be avoided in this way. Epitaxial layers of good quality (ND − NA≃1016−1017 cm−3 were grown at a rate of 0.8 μm/h.

Results of gain measurements on an AlGaAs laser amplifier with an optical isolator are reported. The maximum net gain was 25 dB when input power was less than −40 dBm. By measuring internal loss, a saturation parameter was estimated to be 6 mW.

Application of a semiconductor laser as a preamplifier in a p.c.m. i.m. fibre-optic transmission system was studied theoretically and experimentally. Experimental results on equalised baseband noise power and error rate performance are in good agreement with new formulation taking spontaneous emission into account. The semiconductor laser preamplifier is found to substantially enhance optical receiver sensitivity.

Commercially available m.o.s. microprocessors are relatively slow and unsuitable for the implementation of medium-speed voice-band data modems. The main problem is algebraic multiplication of the optimum detection algorithm. A suboptimal detection procedure without multiplication is presented and is suitable for m.o.s. microprocessor-based implementation.
