The letter presents experimental data for modified reactance-loaded short-backfire arrays. It is shown that the use of a rectangular subreflector, in conjunction with a half-wave-length rim around the edge of the main reflector, results in a smaller and simpler structure having larger power gain, smaller beamwidth, and lower sidelobe levels.

High sensitivity unbiased detectors employing Ni-nInP Schottky-barrier diodes have been developed in a submillimetre-wave region. The voltage sensitivities of 120 V/W at 300 GHz and 17 V/W at 450 GHz were obtained, which are about three times higher than those of the usually used unbiased Si point contact diode detectors.

Polarisation characteristics in long single-mode fibres are investigated. Single-mode fibres used in the experiment have been fabricated by the v.a.d. (vapour-phase axial deposition) method. It was shown from the measurements on a 21 km single-span v.a.d. fibre that the state of polarisation of the incident light beam can be maintained over a long length when the incident plane of polarisation coincides with the major or minor axis of the single-mode optical fibre.

The tunnelling current in Ga0.47In0.53As p-n junctions from Zener tunnelling is calculated from the Kane model with no adjustable parameters. This calculation indicates that band-to-band tunnelling becomes an important contribution to the reverse current near breakdown (JR = 10−1 Acm−2) in abrupt p-n junctions for |ND−NA|>6 × 1015 cm−3. Experimental measurements show, however, that band-to-band tunnelling becomes the dominant contribution to the dark current near breakdown for |ND−NA|>4 × 1016 cm−3.

The pressure-induced retardation in a sample of single-mode fibre cable has been measured. The pressure sensitivity of the uncoated fibre was found to agree with the theoretically expected value. Application of a silicone rubber coating reduced the sensitivity by over 50%. No pressure sensitivity was measured when a loose-fitting tube was extruded around the coated fibre.

Images produced by current parallel scan thermal imaging systems tend to be overlaid by a periodic pattern of horizontal lines. These are caused by differences in performance between detector-amplifier pairs. A simple digital processing technique is described which considerably reduces the effects of these differences.

We describe new single-mode fibre optic devices which are completely equivalent to fractional wave plates of classical optics. They employ a very simple configuration which uses the stress birefringence induced by bending the fibre. Several devices can be combined to control the polarisation inside any single-mode fibre.

A simple procedure is presented for obtaining reduced-order models for linear multivariable systems. It does not require the calculation of the eigenvalues, and the stability of the reduced model is guaranteed if the original system is stable. It generalises the Routh approximation method to the multivariable case.
