A remarkable improvement of external efficiency is achieved in double-heterojunction GaAs-GaAlAs superluminescent diodes (d.h. s.l.d.s) by application of antireflective coatings on the front face. The external differential quantum efficiency of 750–1500 μm long s.l.d.s increased from 1.2% to 4.5% (n.a.=0.7) after coating the front face with a quarter-wavelength silicon-monoxide film.

An improvement to a recently reported theory for the analysis of the pattern and impedance loci of microstrip antennas is developed. It yields a theory that is simple and inexpensive to apply. This is achieved by lumping all antenna losses into an effective dielectric loss tangent and then analysing the microstrip antenna as a lossy cavity. It is found that the resulting expression for impedance of the microstrip antenna is in good agreement with measured results for all modes and feed locations.

The present calculation pertains to the odd-mode capacitance of an infinite transmission line consisting of two perfectly conducting zero-thickness parallel strips of unequal widths in a homogeneous medium. Graphical data and a simple empirical formula are presented.

A scanning-electron-beam zapping system for the annealing of ion-implanted semiconductors is described. Experiments have been conducted on silicon implanted with various doses of arsenic and boron. Results show that for a given beam power full annealing is achieved above a threshold exposure.

A translinear circuit is described that can perform exact frequency doubling, free of any d.c. component and with linear amplitude transfer. The basic circuit consists of matched-transistor monolithic arrays. Theory and circuit operation with results are given.

P.M. and a.m. puke modulators for millimetre waves are described that have been realised using a waveguide below-cutoff technique. This technique is well suited to the establishment of lumped elements of low loss, even in the millimetre wave region. Performance data of a 34 GHz phase modulator are a bandwidth of 12%, an insertion loss of 0.5 dB and switching times below 1 ns. An on-off switch shows 0.5 dB and more than 20 dB losses, respectively, over a 1 GHz frequency band.

The eigenvalues of the noise covariance matrix, which determine the rate of convergence of an adaptive array, are functions of the powers of the interference sources and their directions of arrival. The case of two interference sources is examined and the eigenvalues are expressed explicitly in terms of these factors.

The effect of ion implantation on the growth of oxides formed on gallium arsenide in oxygen at 510°C for 2¼ h has been studied. Thirteen ion species were implanted at doses of 1×1015 ions cm−2. Potassium, nitrogen and fluorine produced significant increases in oxidation, whereas calcium, aluminium and nickel had the opposite effect.

Measurements at 35 GHz of the extinction cross-sections of sets of particles of ice simulating dry and wet hail are reported. An open-resonator system was used. Results are compared with values calculated by applying Mie's theory to spherical particles having a simple composition.

The energy generated by solar cells can be transformed into a.c. power by means of inverters. In most cases these inverters cannot be tested under real conditions, since large solar-cell arrays are not yet available at reasonable prices. Therefore, a circuit that simulates a solar-cell array has been developed.

A new sensitivity measure is described. This measure, known as the slope-normalised sensitivity, takes into account the high slope (with frequency) often exhibited by network responses. In this way, the closeness of a characteristic to the nominal response following a component change may be assessed.

Previous work showed that the transmission loss of step-index phosphosilicate fibre is dependent upon the draw tension. Similar experiments with graded-index germanium-borosilicate fibres do not show the same dependence over a range of tension from 5 g to 100 g and a range of draw speeds from 0.25 m/s to 5 m/s.

The distribution of the ionic wind velocity in a rod-plane gap is measured and compared with the distribution of photoelectron and corona current. A similitude is observed in the distribution curves when the measured quantities and the radial distance are normalised with respect to the maximum value and the gap length, respectively.

Previous calculations of radiation loss from an HE11-mode propagating on a fibre with a sinusoidally perturbed core boundary are valid only for radiation directions sufficiently near 0° or 90° to the fibre axis. This letter presents a solution valid for all angles and also shows that radiation maxima are clearly associated with leaky-mode resonances.

A sandwich-ribbon optical-fibre waveguide is described, which is manufactured using arsenic trisulphide as the optical core material and a plastic—polyethersulphone—as the supporting substrate. Mode propagation in the composite structure is observed, and the use of the fibre to couple light into and out of high-refractive-index integrated optical devices is proposed.

Experimental investigation of the relative second- and third-harmonic distortion in d.h. semiconductor lasers is presented. The results are compared to the harmonic distortion predicted from simple rate equations. It is suggested that nearfield instabilities limit the minimum distortion level.

Measured data on the spread in effective permittivity of alumina substrates in the range 1–18 GHz are presented. The data show both the spread from sample to sample and over the area of a single substrate. Effective permittivities were calculated from the resonant frequencies of open-ended straight-line resonators.

Subjective tests are reported, at 3 bits/pel, of the performance of several predictive coders for monochrome 625-line television signals under five different conditions of motion, including panning and scene changes. The results indicate that interframe prediction, used on a selective basis, can produce a worthwhile improvement in picture quality over that possible by intraframe prediction alone.

This letter describes an f.m. drive for transmitters operating at medium frequencies. The drive uses digital techniques, giving a centre frequency that is highly stable but still allows frequency modulation, is linear and has a high modulation index. It was developed initially for the BBC's motoring service proposal (CARFAX).
