The exact computed values for both electromagnetic and acoustic axial backscattering by prolate spheroids of various axial ratios are compared together in the Rayleigh and the resonance regions. Interesting observations are made in the context of a previous-attempt in this direction.

A new design for disc transducers with good efficiency and large bandwidth is presented here. The design method is based on the use of quarter-wave matching layers between the piezoelectric ceramic and the load, and the use of a quarter-wave unmatching layer between the same ceramic and its high acoustic impedance backing. A method is proposed for the measurement of the accuracy of high-speed analogue/digital convertors, using automatic digital counting of the occupancy of each quantisation level by a known input signal. The results provide a dynamic quantisation characteristic and can be related to specific quantiser defects.

A new substrate fed logic structure is presented which makes use of V-groove silicon etching. Experimental results are presented for the devices. A speed-power product below 1 pJ was obtained despite the large area of the test structures and the use of conventional bipolar processing. Further improvement in performance is expected by optimising the process parameters.

A new form of expansion of multiple-valued logical functions in generalised Fourier series in terms of the Chrestenson functions is presented. It is shown that this expansion exhibits the property of ‘disjoint spectral translation’ known in binary spectral logic design. This allows extending the possibility of low complexity realisation to a large class of multiple-valued logical functions.

Using an open-resonator method, the scattering widths of a set of thin copper wires have been measured. The results are in agreement with theory to within about 9%.

A relatively simple formula for calculating approximately the single-mode limit (cutoff frequency of LP11 mode) of an optical fibre having an arbitrary refractive-index profile is derived. The normalised cutoff frequencies are computed by using the derived formula for various profiles and are compared with rigorous values, showing fairly good agreement.

A new low-temperature selective zinc-diffusion process into GaAs and GaP, is described. It involves a room temperature anodic oxidation for growth of oxide films containing zinc, and a subsequent heating for diffusion, using the oxide as the diffusion source. The scheme for the expansion of a 2-dimensional f.i.r. digital filter function into a sum of separable functions is generalised. Using the generalised procedure a m × m order filter function can be expressed in as many as m!n!/(|m−n| + 1)! ways. Further it is also proved that the number of terms in the expansion will be equal to the rank of the matrix.

The distributions of Hadamard coefficient for blocks of size 8 × 1 picture elements in six 625-line television pictures were obtained. The data were well approximated by gamma distributions. Low-sequency components were best fitted by choosing Γ(n) with n in the range 1/2−2/3, and high-sequency components by n = 1 (equivalent to the negative exponential distribution).

A phase-locked loop containing a voltage-controlled oscillator (v.c.o.) synchronised to a harmonic of its fundamental output frequency may be used to form an attractive digital phase shifter providing low phase error with relatively simple circuitry and control requirements. Phase increments of 2π/n radians are obtained, where n is the order of harmonic used.

It is shown that recent results in the theory of entire eigen-structure assignment greatly facilitate the design of high-gain state-feedback controllers. The design of such controllers is reduced to the separate computation of well-defined subspaces associated with the ‘slow’ and ‘fast’ modes of closed-loop systems incorporating high-gain controllers.

New closed form formulas are presented for the dispersion characteristic (λ'/ λ) and characteristic impedance (Z0) of single slot line. λ'/λ and Z0 are given as functions of the slot width w over substrate thickness H ratio and the ratio H/λ where λ is the free-space wavelength. For the ranges of variable considered λ'/λ values agree with S. B. Cohn's and Mariani et al. results to within 5% and Z0 agrees to within 14.5% or better.

A novel dielectric waveguide system is reported for the transmission of microwave power to divers. The performance of the system is tested at 3 kW, c.w. (8.3 GHz) power levels. BaTiO3/p.t.f.e. double layered breathing tubes operated in the HE11-mode are used as waveguides. Delaunching is achieved with solid loads compensating for body and respiratory heat losses.
