Au Schottky barriers incorporating an interfacial native oxide have been formed on n type InP. Depending on oxide thickness and annealing conditions these devices exhibit high barrier heights, ϕB > 0.75 eV, ideality factors n as low as 1.04 and very low saturation current densities <∼ 10−7 Acm−2.

A charge-sensitive pulse pre-amplifier is described, with the following characteristics: linear response of 1.04 × 1015 mV C−1 between 10−15 and 10−12 C, input noise ≥ 660 r.m.s. electrons, pulse repetition rate ≤ 3 × 106 pps, and rugged design.

A detailed field theory for DH lasers is developed. Two transversal modes are taken into account, and the theory is able to account for kinks in the light-current characteristics even for ideal lasers.

A general method for the detection of multiplicative overflow has been developed. The method has been found suitable in 16–15-mod residue system from the consideration of cost and speed. A circuit for 16–15-mod-multiplicative overflow detection has been proposed.

Simple formulae are given for the field displacement caused by bending, the change in mode volume and for the mode coupling loss which arises at transitions between straight and curved sections of single-mode optical fibre. These formulae are in good agreement with other, more exact, theories.

A method for optimising the feed position of a prime focus reflector antenna from phase and amplitude recordings of the radiated field is given. Experimental results illustrate the improved radiation pattern and the detailed profile map of the reflector attained after feed position correction.

The performance of a simple, low-cost, centre-fed, efficient planar array aerial for Q band is described. The microstrip radiating pattern is produced by conventional photolithographic techniques. Gains up to 25 dB with beamwidths of 8° and bandwidths of 500 MHz make this ‘flat’ aerial attractive for many industrial applications where space is limited.

Changes to the design of the UK Post Office long distance TE01 mode circular waveguide are described. A 250 m length of the new waveguide structure has been manufactured and assessed; its transmission performance in straight route sections has been improved and much lower loss in curved sections has been achieved.

The results of an experiment to measure digital signal forward echo impairment are compared with the calculated impairment obtained from measured cable characteristics. Modified theory gave good agreement in three out of four cases.

Measurements on borosilicate fibres with noncircular cores indicate that the noncircular geometry and the associated stress-induced birefringence alone are not sufficient to maintain polarisation in single-mode fibres. To achieve single polarisation fibres, it is necessary to deliberately enhance the anisotropic birefringence.

The usefulness of impedance boundary conditions for the investigation of field problems concerning corrugated surfaces is studied by its application to the scattering by a partially corrugated conducting prism. The corrugated portion of the prism is represented by an impedance surface and the behaviour of the surface currents and the scattered fields are examined. The results are also compared with available data on a similar problem.

An alternative way of generating the pedestal current in a pyroelectric vidicon (p.e.v.) is described. The better uniformity of the pedestal current gives less flicker when the p.e.v. is used in the 25 Hz chopper mode. A more uniform tube response is expected, being useful when temperature measurements, based on the local video level, are made.

A new type of H-guide is proposed which is more than ten times as large as the conventional H-guide in transverse dimensions, but can operate in a single mode. Low loss soda-lime-silica glass fibres of minimum loss of 4.23 dB/km at 0.85 μm were prepared with 6.5 dB/km extra absorption loss due to OH radicals at 0.97 μm. The loss factors were analysed from the impurity contents and scattering loss. These fibres have been developed by unique preparation techniques of wet mixing of raw materials and dry gas flow at glass melting.

Gallium arsenide varactor diodes with low series resistance (∼0.25 Ω) for u.h.f. t.v. tuners are developed. Uniformity and reproducibility of diode capacitance is improved markedly by using improved ion implantation and l.p.e. techniques. The standard deviation of diode capacitance distribution is 0.74% at V = 3.0 V within a wafer. A good r.f. tracking characteristic can be obtained in varactor tuners.

Attenuations of radio transmissions at 10.7, 19.4 and 36.05 GHz by rain on a 7.5 km path have been compared on a statistical basis with attenuations derived from rainfall rates, measured simultaneously along the path, using the empirical relationship β = γRη, where β is the attenuation coefficient in dB km−1, R is the rainfall rate in mm h−1 and γ and η are parameters dependent on polarisation and frequency.

GaAs Read impatt diodes have been developed for pulsed operation in X and Ku bands. Conversion efficiencies of 32% and 29% have been measured for p+n+n−n+ (high-low) doping profiles grown by liquid phase and vapour phase epitaxy, respectively. Peak powers of 30 W in X band and 20 W in Ku band have been obtained with single mesas on gold plated heatsinks. Multiple mesas in parallel and diamond heatsinking were employed to improve thermal resistance. Microwave circuit and chip level power combining techniques were also investigated and greater than 90% combining efficiency was achieved on the chip level.

A 3 dB coupler was fabricated using two partially polished fibres which were in contact with each polished portion. The excess insertion loss and the directivity of this coupler are measured to be 0.36 dB and 47.0 dB, respectively.

Calculations were performed to assess the influence of reduced resolution, due to the limited local numerical aperture of a fibre, on the intensity profile determined by the near-field method. It was found that this effect could lead to small but significant errors in the determination of the actual profile, especially at large relative radii.
