The threshold behaviour of cholesteric to nematic phase-change cells with homogeneous and homeotropic surface alignment is compared. The former raises, the latter lowers, the threshold voltage. Departures from predicted linearity are seen when the cholesteric pitch is comparable with the film thickness.

This letter develops an approach for fault detection and checking sequence design of sequential machines based on the principle of machine modification through augmentation of extra input and extra outputs, taking into consideration the case where faults occurring in a machine may cause an increase in its number of states.

Broadband Ku-band amplification has been extended into the range of medium power levels. A single-ended 100 mW amplifier stage has been developed for the 12–18 GHz frequency band using a GaAs Schottky-barrier field-effect transistor. Minimum gain at 20 dBm of output power was 4dB. When operating in the driver mode, a minimum gain of 5dB at an output power of 15 dBm was measured across Ku-band. Higher gains can easily be achieved by cascading several of these amplifier stages. Gain, output power and impedance characteristics as a function of frequency are discussed.

Results are presented of calculations and experiments for the relative 1/f noise C and the resistance R between circular contact electrodes on a 2-dimensional conductor. The results can also be used for 3-dimensional conductors such as ionic solutions with a pair of parallel cylindrical electrodes of the same length. The experimental results on carbon sheet conductors are in good agreement with the calculated values.

The design of three-valued cycling gates with c.m.o.s. integrated circuits is presented. Circuits for the cycling and the inverse cycling gates prove to be simpler than those previously reported.

A deconvolution algorithm is presented for calculating the N tap weights of a transversal-filter equaliser. The procedure attempts to control the size of individual, time-domain response errors rather than simply minimise total mean-square error of the response. A least-square error solution for the tap weights is iteratively modified, using only elementary algebraic matrix operations, in an effort to satisfy tolerance constraints on the envelope of the equalised impulse response. The algorithm is suitable for digital computation.

The concept of the worst month is of importance to the designers of telecommunication systems who have to meet percentage of ‘any month’ performance criteria. This letter provides a definition of the worst month and presents a procedure for the estimation of worst-month statistics based on a series of monthly values for the probability (percentage of time) of exceeding a preselected threshold. A procedure is also presented for relating worst-month statistics to average annual statistics.

A state-space representation of an elementary 2-dimensional digital network is presented. The problem of determining the frequency response starting from its state-space equation is reduced to solving two sets of linear simultaneous equations in real unknowns at each pair of frequencies. The efficiency and the computational aspects of the proposed method are also discussed.
