A simple graphical interpretation of modulation filters is described by considering the spectral implications of the bifrequency system function using two orthogonal frequency axes. The effect of time-division multiplexing a number of identical transmission paths is considered and demonstrated.

A solution is proposed for the ‘inverse’ or ‘dual’ Riccati equation using a modified Newton's algorithm, thus avoiding initialisation for most problems.

The tensile strength of 10 km of coated silica fibres, drawn using a zirconia induction furnace and tested in 20 m gauge lengths, is reported. 4 km of fibre exhibited a minimum strength above 4.2GN/m2 (600 kp.s.i.), demonstrating for the first time the feasibility of achieving long-length unimodal strength distributions for furnace-drawn fibre. Several other kilometres resulted in near-unimodal distributions with minimum strengths of 3.5GN/m2 (500 kp.s.i.) or greater, demonstrating the consistency with which high strengths were achieved.

Contrary to present practice, data transmission through voice-grade circuits becomes more efficient when p.r.s. codes are used. It is shown that 3-level and higher-level p.r.s. codes can achieve data rates up to 7.2 kb.p.s. when suitable delay equalisation of the bandpass channel (300–3400 Hz) is provided. Satisfactory eye pattern and error rates have been obtained.

A recently developed radar system using a c.w. microwave noise spectrum from an impatt oscillator as the transmitted signal has shown useful performance. The application of a digital correlator to measure, essentially in real time, the autocorrelation function of the noise spectrum and provide a radar display of targets at ranges of up to at least 1 km is now described.

Soft decision decoding has been successfully applied to convolutional and block-coding schemes. This latter suggests some alternative applications with particular attention being paid to transmission codes. Alternate mark inversion (a.m.i.) is used as an example where an effective signal/noise ratio improvement of up to 2.8 dB can be obtained.

Intermodulation interferences of multicarrier signals can be reduced at the expense of increased bandwidth if the signal carriers are arranged in appropriate frequency plans. The paper investigates in detail the trade-off between bandwidth and intermodulation interference. The results are presented in tabular form.

An algorithmic procedure has been developed, suited to computer solution, for a switching function of n variables that can be synthesised by one multiplexer MUX(p, q), (n−q > l) without the necessity of referring to all the possible Ashenhurst's decomposition charts DCn(Λq|Λn−q).

Intermodulation distortion generated in a m.e.s.f.e.t. amplifier is analysed using a Volterra series representation. The transistor model used enables direct analytical determination of the nonlinear elements from small signal measurements. Experimental verification comparing predicted and measured second-and third-order intermodulation products in the amplifer is presented.

Buried SiO2, layers were formed by oxygen-ion (14O+) implantation into silicon. The impurity distribution of the oxygen-implanted silicon substrate was analysed by auger spectroscopy. The epitaxially-grown silicon layer on this substrate showed a good monocrystalline structure, and a 19-stage c.m.o.s. ring oscillator exhibited high performance in operation.

A new clan of all-pole lowpass filters having a flat magnitude characteristic at the origin and at a frequency ω0 in the pass-band is presented. The remaining degree of freedom is used to minimise the characteristic function over the passband using least-mean-square norm. It is shown that the magnitude characteristic of new filters is superior to those for the Butterworth and transitional Butterworth-Cheby̅shev filters, both in the passband and in the stopband.

It is argued that a large-inductance superconducting loop interrupted by a single Josephson junction can function as a memory element. Bundles of flux quanta can be stored in the cell and removed from it by the application of appropriate bias currents or fields.

The diffusion profile of a stripe optical waveguide formed by ion exchange has been calculated. A finite-difference technique was used to solve the nonlinear ion-exchange equation in two dimensions. The effect of employing a metallic rather than a nonconducting mask is to significantly reduce the width of the diffused stripe.

In this letter we introduce a general technique for the design of nonmonotonic lowpass filters having multiple pairs of transmission zeros and the characteristic of minimum least-mean-square. error in any interval in the passband. Many recently-derived filters can be shown to be special cases of this new approximation.

Suspended coupled striplines have very different even- and odd-mode phase velocities. A structure modified by the presence of a slot is proposed to obtain equalisation, a condition necessary to build broadband couplers. This modification has the advantage of preserving the suspended configuration.

Tensile strength measurements have been made on fused silica fibres coated with a silicone resin or an ethylene-vinyl-acetate (e.v.a.) hot-melt adhesive. The average strength measured in 20 m guage lengths was 4.7 GN/m2 (671 kp.s.i.) for 3 km of silicone-coated fibre and 5.2 GN/m2 (743 kp.s.i.) for 3.6 km of the e.v.a.-coated fibres. Although control of many drawing and coating process parameters is required to achieve these strengths, the results suggest that under similar conditions other coating systems may perform equally well.
