The results of a simulation study are presented to show that a recently published ‘bootstrap’ identification method for estimating the states and parameters of a linear discrete-time stochastic system does not work. The reasons why the method does not work are explained.

Image contrast in the scanning acoustic microscope is affected by axial translation of the object along the lens axis. The explanation lies in the recognition that the acoustic reflection coefficient varies with axial translation in a manner that is unique and characteristic of the material involved. Examples of material signatures are given and used to explain the observed image contrast. The instrument's ability to obtain crystallographic information is suggested.

A powerful method of timing signal recovery for use in (1, 0, −1) multiple-response v.s.b.a.m. data modems is described. The phase of the recovered timing signal relative to the data eye pattern is substantially independent of the demodulating carrier phase and the transmission distortion.

An algorithm is presented which can be applied to Reed-Massey algorithm codes and utilises orthogonal and non-orthogonal check sums with a resulting improved performance. The algorithm is applied to a well-known class of convolutional threshold codes with a subsequent improvement in the nonbounded error-correcting capability.

A new type of comparator, consisting of a tunnel diode and a dual gate m.o.s.f.e.t., allowed the construction of a simple, 25 MHz current to frequency convertor (I/fc). The letter describes the principle of operation of the I/fc and the differences to I/fcs using customary comparators. The result of a computer simulation about some interesting aspects of I/fc linearity is also presented.

A general procedure is given for the design of an active switched-capacitor filter from an actlve-RC model. The process is based on trapezoidal integration. The resulting sampled-data circuit response is related to that of the model through the bilinear z-transformation.

We describe a method based on the selective mode excitation at different wavelengths for studying the profile dispersion influence on the modal dispersion. By using this technique, we are able to determine either the optimum wavelength at which the fibre should be operated or the correction needed for optimising the index profile at a given wavelength.

A multi-sampling system having sampling frequencies much below the Nyquist rate is proposed for use in frequency counters. Its measurement range extends into the microwave frequency region without the long acquisition times associated with the conventional microwave frequency translation techniques. A simple and accurate method, using a sinusoidally modulated l.e.d., is proposed to measure material dispersion of optical fibres. By this method, material dispersion was measured using a step and a graded index fibre. The results were in good agreement with those of other methods.

A theoretical analysis of the mixer operation of an f.e.t. is presented. The model is based on a nonlinear equivalent circuit deduced from small signal S-parameter measurements. A Volterra series analysis enables the conversion gain to be calculated for different circuit conditions.

This letter presents a comparison between the performance, in terms of ripple and transition bandwidth, of nonrecursive digital filters with arbitrary phase characteristics and those with a linear phase response. Results are given which show that filters can be designed to have an arbitrary phase response, yet give as good a gain response as filters with linear phase.

An active grounded inductance using a single second generation current conveyor (CC II) as the active element and three passive components is proposed. The inductance is seen to be suitable for moderate-Q applications. For high-Q with independent Q-controlled inductances suitable circuit techniques pertaining to the introduction of a second CC II as a voltage follower are also presented.

A method of phase correction in two-integrator loop filters is described in which a single compensating resistor is added in series with one of the two capacitors necessary for implementing the second-order filter section. The characterisation, design and realisation of a low noise GaAs m.e.s.f.e.t. amplifier to replace a narrow band parametric amplifier at 1.7 GHz is described. Special measurement and analytical techniques are necessary owing to the high reflection coefficients and conditional stability of the transistor, as well as the very low noise figures being measured. A single stage amplifier is realised with a noise figure of 1.25 dB and 13.5 dB associated gain at 1.7 GHz.

An adaptive version of the difference detection and correction system for the partial removal of transmission errors in linear p.c.m. speech without the use of channel coding is presented. The improvement in s.n.r. compared to the nonadaptive system is approximately 3 dB for transmission bit error-rates between 0.5 and 5%.

A method for predicting line widths in electron beam lithography is described. Computer predictions of line dimension as a function of dose, and profile as a function of proximity to another line are compared with experimental results on 0.35μm thick PMMA at a beam energy of 15 keV.
