Multilevel sequences having strictly zero periodic autocorrelation for nonzero shifts are discussed. A construction is given which yields a sequence of larger length of this type from two or more such sequences.

The fast Fourier transform andd the fast Walsh transform are too slow for some real-time applications. For binary data, an ‘instant’ Fourier transform is based on harmonic analysis in a space of 2n-tuples of 0s and 1s. Simple, modular logic finishes transforming 2n real-time serial binary data one clock pulse after the last datum arrives.

The arc-fusion method for splicing has been improved by adopting a new technique. Fibre ends to be spliced are smoothly arranged by prefusion before the fibres are pressed and fused together. An average splicing loss of 0.09 dB has been attained by using the new method.

An online method of continuously monitoring the attenuation of an optical fibre during its manufacture is described. It provides a complete attenuation/length profile of the fibre. The present system can measure an overall attenuation of 30 dB, and the results agree with corresponding offline differential measurements to better than ± 1 dB/km.

A new principle for a c.c.d. transversal filter with parallel inputs is shown. Using this approach, no differential output amplifier is necessary. Design considerations of a device successfully tested are reported and the first measured results are compared with theoretical predictions.

The ‘time-reversed-impulse-response’ method of phase equalisation is explained theoretically. Experimental results are presented, showing the impulse response of an analogue magnetic recorder before and after phase equalisation. The transversal-filter equaliser (32-tap analogue delay line of 320 μs length) is adjusted in the time domain so that actual phase-response measurements are not necessary.

A variation of the classic Blumlein–Miller voltage-sweep-circuit technique employs capacitance magnification to minimise the magnitude of the timing capacitance required for a given sweep speed and charging current. In an illustrative circuit, a 10 pF capacitor is used in the generation of an 8 V amplitude sweep of about 8 ms duration.

Based on a minimum i.t.a.e. criterion, optimal control algorithm parameter surfaces are presented for 2nd-order computer-controlled systems. They illustrate the variation in proportional, integral and derivative parameters with sampling period, time delay and system time constant.

It is shown that methods of measuring the normalised frequency in single-mode fibres through observation of mode cut-off wavelengths give erroneous results. This is because the various loss mechanisms which exist in a practical fibre can have an appreciable eflfect near cut-off.

A multivalued integrated-injection-logic full adder is described. Results obtained on the experimental structure indicate that the multivalued I2L full adder offers an increase in functional density while retaining approximately the same area–delay product as a binary full adder.

The s.a.w. reflection coefficient of the metal strip has been measured on y-cut LiNbO3 for waves reflected through 90° from the z into the x direction. The maximum value of the reflection coefficient of a metal strip is 0.020, when the width/periodicity ratio of the metal strips is about 0.3.

Excess noise in resistors, semiconductors etc. exhibits a high variance of variance. A new mathematical model, well matched to the physical background, is proposed to describe this phenomenon, without the contradictions of previous models.

The forward-scatter compled amplitudes of spheroidel ice and water particles are evaluated at 20 and 30 GHz by using a field a point-matching method. The crosspolarisation resulting from a group of identical equioreintated particles is then derived. It is seen that equiorientated ice particles can cause significant crosspolarisation with little attenuation, in agreement with recent measurements of crosspolarisation on satellite paths.

Electrically conducting regions are found in oxides produced by thermal oxidation of silicon, and these defects are believed to be associated with the presence of positive-ion contamination of the film. Films produced by two techniques (HCl, phosphorus stabilisation) capable of gettering or neutralising such ions are used to investigate their effectiveness in removing oxide defects.

For measuring the frequency response of an optical fibre, a mode scrambler utilising a sinusoidal bend and a new set-up based on the attenuation-comparison method have been proposed. Measurements for multimode step-index fibres have revealed that the long-fibre response can be closely predicted from the short-fibre response, using an appropriate choice for the scrambler parameter.

A hot metal wire creates a knee in the fibre and a score in the hollow of the knee. The knee is used to introduce a nonuniform stress distribution across the fibre with a maximum at the score. Reproducible mirror-finished fibre ends were made by using a compact tool.

A phase-shift modulation technique is described for the linearisation of light sources in fibre-optic transmission systems. A 25 dB reduction in the 2nd-harmonic distortion has been achieved in specially fabricated GaAlAs double-heterostructure light-emitting dioded (l.e.d.s) compared with the distortion levels typical of conventional l.e.d.s.

The problem of estimating the number of moving targets in a resolution cell is considered. An orthogonal transform is described which enables this parameter to be derived. The application of the method is disscussed with reference to an experiment using real data.
