The letter gives simple, direct formulas for the design single-sideband crystal ‘ladder’ filters. The resulting designs are easily realisable by using only crystals and capacitors.

We describe those factors which influence the design of highspeed optical preamplifiers, and examine the exchange between bandwidth and noise in a shunt-feedback first stage. For a given preamplifier bandwidth, it is shown that an operating point exists which minimises the amplifier noise level.

A method based on 2-dimensional, bivariate interpolation is described for use in evaluating the Sommerfeld integrals which arise in an integral-equation solution of antennas which interact with a halfspace. This approach provides the rigour of the Sommerfeld formulation with a computer time comparable to the perfect-ground problem.

The spot size of the HE11 mode in a practical single-mode fibre mainly depends on the numerical aperture and not on the normalised frequency. An alternative definition of spot size in terms of a matching Gaussian beam is much simpler to use.

By careful design of the Y-junctions and bends of a Ti-diffused LiNbO3 branched waveguide modulator, an efficient intensity modulator has been realised. The halfwave voltage is 2.0 V, the extinction ratio is –18 dB and the loss between the input and output channel waveguides is approximately 5 dB at 0.633 μm.

Unstable results were obtained when utilising the moment method in parallel-plate-waveguide problems. The cause of the instability is determined. The introduction of a missing boundary condition leads to very satisfactory numerical results.

Measurements have been made of the chirp characteristics of high-efficiency pulsed InP oscillators at 17 GHz for a variety of device constructions. The magnitude of the chirp follows reasonably closely the transient changes in active-layer temperature with the same sign as the inherent device dF/dT. Using an integral heatsink construction, chirp levels of less than 15 MHz/μs have been achieved at 17 GHz with peak powers of 9 W and 14.5% efficiency.

A 450 GHz-band tripler delivering an output power of –11.2 dBm has been developed. A high-efficiency 300 GHz doubler whose conversion loss is 10.7 dB has also been developed. These efficient multiplications have been obtained by the use of GaAs Schottky-barrier diodes and thin-film integrated-circuit techniques.

The letter describes special display circuits designed to present, in easily interpretable form, the high azimuth resolution information produced by an array signal-processing radar system. A technique for characterising the 3rd-order intermodulationdistortion properties of GaAs f.e.t.s as a function of the load admittance presented to the output of the device is described. General formulas are given for linear and circular crosspolarisation from a population of small, highly eccentric, ice particles forming a pure-differential-phase-shifting medium. We derive an equation that relates the differences between the mean transit times of modes of a multimode fibre with loss, multimode dispersion and mode-conversion parameters. The concept of dynamic equilibrium is developed for the temporal difference. Further, we propose a new method of simultaneous measurement of loss and mode-conversion parameters which utilises the temporal difference.
