Pulse-delay measurements on fibres are reported, made over a wide wavelength range straddling the zero of material dispersion. Results for phosphosilicate and a range of germania-doped fibres indicate that the wavelength of negligible material dispersion lies in the range 1270–1400 nm. The optimum wavelength depends on the concentration for fibres containing germania.

The design of a y.i.g.-tuned f.e.t. oscillator that covers the X-band octave of 6 to 12 GHz is presented. The oscillator uses a compound feedback scheme to generate a negative conductance over the required bandwidth. Excellent agreement is obtained between the computer predictions and the experimental results.

(111) Si specimens were implanted at room temperature with 5 × 1014 cm−2, 120 keVP+ ions, and annealed at 950°C. Transmission electron-microscope cross-section specimens revealed two discrete damage layers at depths of 95 and 190 nm. Electrical profiles showed decreases in carrier concentration and/or mobility at these two depths.

The design and construction of a surface-acoustic-wave (s.a.w.) pseudonoise (p.n.) code controlled frequency-hopping (f.h.) synthesiser for spread-spectrum (s.s.) communication is reported. The prototype synthesiser uses s.a.w. chirp filters with 60 MHz centre frequency, 5 MHz/μs is dispersive slope and 25 MHz bandwidth, and operates in both continuous-wave and f.h. modes. Experimental results show an output centred on 120 MHz, electronically programmable over a 25 MHz bandwidth in 63 discrete hops.

Nonrepeated optical-fibre transmissions, 100 Mb/s 12 km nonequalised and 400 Mb/s 8 km, at a wavelength of 830 nm have been realised experimentally by an extensive use of recently developed high-performance optical devices and fibres.

A high-speed carry finding device consisting of seven inhibitors, each an integrated Schottky electrode-triggered Gunn device and an m.e.s.f.e.t., was fabricated monolithically. An extension of the graphical technique for the propagation of signals through logic systems is proposed. Nonlinearities-and transport delays are catered for, and the gate model used is simple and suited to calculation in large systems. A system is examined graphically and the results are compared with those obtained experimentally.

Simultaneous 20 and 30 GHz attenuation measurements have been made along a 23° elevated slant path to the ATS-6 satellite. The ratio of 30 to 20 GHz attenuation is found to be 2.20±0.13 over the 30 GHz attenuation range of 4 to 14 dB.

Gratings of finite width provide wave guidance by means of reflection from the grating boundaries. Measured mode patterns are compared with the theoretically predicted patterns, and good agreement is found.

Experimental results are reported on the speed/power performance of normally-off-type GaAs-m.e.s.f.e.t. logic circuits, using an integrated 15-stage ring oscillator as a test circuit. A power consumption as low as 1-5 μW, corresponding to a power-delay product of 1.6 fJ, was obtained. Conversely, a propagation delay time of 650 ps was measured for a power consumption of 20 μW per gate.

An efficient synchronisation signal for the s.d.m.a./s.s-t.d.m.a. satellite is described, which achieves accurate synchronisation in one round-trip time, thus eliminating the need for repeated transmissions of synchronisation bursts. An added feature is the direct measurement of variations in path-length time delay, which may be used to track satellite motion.

Theoretical results are presented for the piezoelectric coupling of a surface-acoustic-wave thin-film transducer on a silicon substrate having a nonzero electrical conductivity. It is shown that, for specific combinations of the material layer thicknesses, this conductivity disappears. Also, under certain conditions, the enhancement in the piezoelectric coupling is degraded.

The differential attenuation and phase shift between vertically and horizontally polarised waves at 36.5 GHz have been measured on a 13.5 km link and compared with theoretical values from a field point matching analysis. It is seen that the differential phase shift is bounded in a small region about zero and changes in sign according to the size of drops involved, as predicted from theory. Differential attenuation also follows theoretical predictions with on-average values given by Laws-Parsons drop sizes.

The amount of water-vapour present in the air has considerable importance at radio frequencies greater than 10 GHz, both in respect of the attenuation and thermal sky-noise emission which it produces. The statistical distribution of atmospheric water vapour, as derived from 10 years of data collected at London's Heathrow Airport, is described, together with how the spread of the statistical distribution is limited if a restricted range of air temperatures to be expected can be specified.

Sharing of communication-satellite capacity among several earth terminals with different traffic requirements is considered, assuming multicarrier f.d.m.a. operation through one nonlinear transponder connected to a multibeam transmit antenna. Analytic results are given for the strategy which maximises spare useful E.I.R.P. and for the resulting upper bound on the capacity when all E.I.R.P. resources have been consumed to overcome system noise.

The clutter-rejection properties of compact f.s.k. bursts with amplitude modulation are investigated. A procedure for computer-aided design of such signals is given. The loss of clutter performance on constraining the individual pulse amplitudes to be equal is evaluated.

Until recently, development of v.h.f.-turnstile-antenna systems for satellites was carried out mainly empirically by using r.f. models, but computer programs are now available to assist in this. One of these programs has been used to model turnstile systems on large cylindrical satellites (of the size of current European scientific satellites) and some general conclusions have been reached concerning the choice of monopole base radius and inclination.
