Recent studies have pointed out the need for very thin (10 μm) fibre samples prepared for interferometric analysis of the refractive index profile of an optical fibre. We show that this is not necessary for all graded-index fibres with reasonable dispersion properties. Sample thicknesses of 125 μm, or more, can be used for fibres with a core diameter of about 50 μm.

Scattering from bodies of revolution with anisotropic and arbitrary boundary conditions is formulated. It is shown that the effect of impedance boundary conditions is to modify only the diagonal elements of the characteristic matrix of the object for the numerical solution. Application to corrugated feeds and consequent simplification of the characteristic matrix, owing to corrugation geometry, are also discussed.

The interconnection of an operational amplifier and an n–p–n transistor array facilitates the design of a negative-current mirror that avoids the use of p–n–p devices. For an input current in the range 1 μA–1 mA, current transfer ratios that differ from unity by less than 0.3% are achievable. The incremental output resistance is inversely related to the operating current, and exceeds 10 Mω at 1 mA.

The fabrication of GaAs power f.e.t.s having 1 μm electron-beam-defined gates with 4800 μm total gatewidth is described. The microwave performance at X-band is compared with that of conventionally defined devices having 2 μm gate lengths.

Radiation from circular waveguides and narrow-angle cones is obtained numerically and their crosspolarised radiation is presented. It is found that the peak crosspolarised radiation is generally a sensitive function of wall thickness, aperture diameter and overall length of the waveguide.

A very-low-noise 0.5 μm-gate GaAs f.e.t. is realised by using intentional side etching of an Au/Ti double layer as the Schottky-gate metal. At 12 GHz, the minimum noise figure is 2.1 dB, with 7.6 dB associated gain at a bias of VD = 4 V, ID= 10 mA. Maximum stable gain is 14 dB at VD = 4 V, ID = 30 mA.

A maximum-likelihood estimator for the pulse-to-pulse correlation coefficient r of Rayleigh-distributed clutter components is considered. For r greater than 0.9, an approximate computationally feasible estimator is derived. Results of Monte Carlo simulation indicate that the approximate estimator is only slightly inferior to the maximum-likelihood estimator.

The radiation pattern of the junction between two different monomode optical fibres is calculated by using the Huygens-Kirchhoff theory of diffraction. The radiation field in the plane of discontinuity is determined with the help of the mode-matching technique. The transverse field distributions of both waveguides are approximated by Gaussian profiles.

When illuminating a semiconductor surface inhomogeneously, e.g. by a small laser spot, the photoexcited electrons and holes will partly diffuse into the dark or shaded semiconductor regions. The effect of such a carrier diffusion on measured decay of photoconductivity is studied quantitatively. The analysis yields a decay proceeding faster than linear recombination would imply. Particularly in the initial stages, the decay is quite similar to a plasma decay controlled by Auger recombination.

A novel structure for onchip tap-weight implementation in integrated c.c.d.-transversal-filter applications is presented. The new ‘double-split-electrodersquo; structure provides improved filter performance over the common-split-electrode technique by reducing the common-mode signal, sensing electrode capacitance and noise pickup.

An iterative method is presented to find the reflector profile which minimises the mean-square error between a scattered and a desired field, thereby achieving pattern synthesis. This technique is applied to 3-dimensional circulary symmetric systems for either field- or power-pattern synthesis. Theoretical and experimental results are given for the problem of synthesising a uniform-amplitude sector beam between 20° and 66°.

A family of nonlinear regulators for multivariable linear systems is developed from receding-horizon linear controllers by making the horizon distance an implicit function of the system state vector. These nonlinear controllers retain the computational simplicity o receding-horizon designs, while adding the advantage of bigger effective gains for large state deviations.

Gallium-arsenide Schottky low–high–low IMPATT-diode chips have been successfully combined in series. A maximum c.w. power output of 22.5 W has been repeatedly obtained in X-band by using six 4-W 0.2-mm-diameter mesa GaAs devices. After careful preselection of GaAs chips (yield ≃ 20%), the GaAs devices combined more readily than did silicon p+–n–n+ impatt chips.

The aim of waveform equalisation in digital transmission is to maximise the signal/noise ratio at the detection node. A simple scheme employing a conventional minimum-phase equalising amplifier to provide the main pulse shaping function and a transversal filter to reduce the remaining intersymbol interference is proposed for use in high-speed coaxial p.c.m. systems.
