Theoretical investigations carried out for the far-field-radiation-pattern prediction of conical horns excited in the spherical TMmn and TEmn modes are applied on the radiation-pattern analysis of TM01 and TE01 modes. The results, valid even for conical horns with large flare angles, provide an optimum horn design for a maximum gain slope near the boresight axis.

A simple method is described which minimises signal distortion in follow-the-leader-feedback (f.l.f.) active filters. The procedure, which is easily implemented on a digital computer, determines the free design parameters of f.l.f. structures such that the signal-level capabilities of the filters are maximised.

A theory is outlined that predicts the scattering loss into bulk waves of high-Q-factor s.a.w. resonators. The theory applies to an isotropic medium. Nevertheless, experimental results on LiNbO3 are interpreted by the theory.

The crosspolarisation levels of symmetric front-fed paraboloids and dual-reflector antenna systems have been determined for a wide range of reflector and feed parameters. It is shown that minimum crosspolarisation is achieved when the feed radiates a polarisation-pure field, and, in this case, the front-fed paraboloid is superior.

A new method of predictive-system optimisation, taking into account the distribution of probabilities of occurrences of the input signal statistical parameters, is proposed. The method is applied to the 1st-order predictor for the video signal. Several approximations of the distribution function (weight function) have been considered.

A technique for routinely determining the intrinsic base diffusion profile in a narrow-basewidth transistor is described. The technique involves the fabrication of a novel Van der Pauw device and the subsequent measurement of the sheet resistance and Hall coefficient of the base region. Diffusion profiles measured in a shallow double-diffused arsenic-emitter boron-base transistor structure by this technique are reported.

Theoret ca results as given in the literature for the open-ended dielectrically loaded parallel-plate waveguide are used to calculate the input reflection coefficient of open-circuited wide microstrip lines. Numerical computations are in good agreement with measurements for a stripwidth/substrate-height ratio of greater than 3.

A simple expression for the error probability for coherent a.s.k/p.s.k systems in an additive mixture of Gaussian and impulsive noise is obtained. It is shown that the impulsive noise considered may, in certain situations, be treated as conditionally Gaussian. This allows the above error probability to be expressed a weighted sum of the error probabilities due to Gaussian noises of different noise powers.
