This letter describes a method of determining overlap width for interdigital electrodes of s.a.w. filters by taking account of electrical terminations and matching circuits. A filter with 22.5% bandwidth is designed by use of damped least squares. Since the amplitude response in the passband can be considerably improved compared with that designed by a Fourier analysis, this method may be useful when the required passband shape is strictly specified.

A revision of the multiplier of Chung and Bedrosian is presented, which uses the same type of r.o.m. loaded with different data, and can perform both simple-multiply and multiply-accumulate. Certain other simple operations may also be performed. No logic is now needed for decoding the outputs. Overflow stages may for some operations have the r.o.m.s replaced by m.s.i. counters. The meanings of the r.o.m. outputs are given.

Simple expressions relating the closed-loop transfer function matrix to the cascade and feedback controller matrices are derived for a multivariable system. An important result is deduced which can simplify some of the design procedures of linear multivariable systems.

A new method is described for measuring an impedance accessible only through an unknown 2-port linear system. Four calibrating impedances are used: a known resistance, a short circuit and two other unknown reactances. The value of impedance is calculable directly from the input measurements using simple step-by-step formulas.

Programmable phase-shift-key signal encoding and correlation is demonstrated using a unique s.a.w. diode-convolver configuration. Biphase tap programming is accomplished by choosing the polarity of the direct bias current applied to an antiparallel silicon-on-sapphire diode pair attached to each delay-line tap. This nonlinear approach also permits accurate correlation of an arbitrarily coded. Doppler-shifted p.s.k. signal. The experimental characteristics of a 64-tap programmable module are described.

If two replicas of the same binary sequence have a relative time delay, this delay may be measured by summing the two sequences and examining the frequency spectrum of the resulting signal. Priority of arrival can be determined by using a 4-phase modulator to combine the two sequences.

An optimisation program OPTIMAL is described which includes algorithms for dispersion and loss in microstrip. The optimisation routine combines pseudorandom and conjugate gradient pattern-search techniques to improve the chances of finding a global-minimum solution to multimodal problems. The optimisation of a GaAs f.e.t. amplifier shows the program's ability to produce good results from poor starting values.

GaAs semi-insulated-gate f.e.t.s (s.i.g.f.e.t.s) have been fabricated by Ar+ bombardment in the gate region. The d c. characteristics and microwave performance are compared with those of conventional power m.e.s.f.e.t.s fabricated from the same slice. Up to 2.9W output power with 4dB gain has been obtained from s.i.g.f.e.t. devices at 8 GHz.

A simple translinear circuit is proposed to provide analogue root-difference-of-squares operation. Fully compatible with s.i.c. technology, the circuit can be used for r.m.s. subtraction, magnitude sine-to-cosine conversion and frequency doubling. Experimental results are presented to support the theory.

In the letter, a derivation of the feedback polynomial of a majority-logic decoder is presented. The feedback polynomial is shown to be related in a simple fashion to the generator polynomial of the code being used. Based on this result, the tedium associated with the conventional approach to obtain the feedback polynomial, such as the long-division routine, can be eliminated.

Binary phase codes for radar pulse compression giving compression ratios greater than 13 (the maximum-length Barker code) must generally be found by trial and error on a digital computer. Formulas are derived for the maximum number of codes of given length which have different autocorrelation functions, and it is shown how redundant codes can be recognised without evaluating the autocorrelation functions.

Wide-angle corrugated horns have found important practical applications as feeds for front-fed reflector antennas when low levels of crosspolarisation are required. A theoretical study has been carried out on the 90° corrugated horn for a structure possessing an 'arbitrary, but finite, number of corrugations. Computed and measured results are shown to be in good agreement for a horn possessing three annular slots.

Some guiding and electro-optic properties of highly ordered (111)-oriented single-crystal zinc-sulphide thin films grown on silicon are reported. A simple relative-phase modulator is described. At a wavelength of 633 nm, the halfwave voltage is 58 V and the attenuation less than 6 dB.

The use of 180° combline directional couplers in strip transmission line mixer circuits enables completely planar single and dual balanced devices to be produced. Results are presented for an X-band single-balanced mixer in triplate. A circuit is described for a planar dual balanced mixer.

A pulse-train selector using neuristor lines in T-R-junctions is presented. Use of T- and R-type junctions using two lines having different refractory periods tr1 and tr2 allows the selection of pulse subtrains from the input pulse train, for which a time interval between pulses is in a given time range (tr1, tr2). Practical realisation of the selector is also given.

The multistage graph provides an underlying structure for conventional telephone networks (the number of ‘stages’ in practice being about seven). A systematic analysis in terms of channel graphs and terminal graphs is carried Out using products of graph projections. A unified theory emerges, and facilitates the synthesis and study of multistage switched networks of high connectivity.
