A method is established by which the components necessary for double reactance compensation of an oscillator may be exactly calculated. Using values of components calculated by this means, tuning curves are derived for particular doubly-compensated oscillators and are compared with the corresponding curves for singly-compensated and uncompensated oscillators.

The power bipolar gridistor is a field-effect device designed essentially to switch high power. A high degree of cathode grid interdigitation very strongly reduces the conducting p grid series resistance and allows high turnoff current capability, with switching times in the microsecond range.

A synthesiser for frequency-hopped waveforms is demonstrated by mixing two chirp signals in a zinc-oxide-on-silicon surface-acoustic-wave nondegenerate convolver. The convolution electrode is segmented into taps which can be independently switched on or off. A separate frequency output is available at each tap.

A synthesis procedure for the Holt-and-Gray configuration (originally proposed for realising 2nd-order allpass functions) is developed. It enables the realisation of a wide class of transfer functions. Realisation of biquadratic nonminimum-phase functions is studied in detail.

A key element in the mechanisation of fault-tolerant system or error-detection system is a logic device call a ‘comparator’.The device detects computer failures by data comparison. The letter describes a ‘self-testing comparator’. We show that, in the circuit, described, only the output wire must be considered hard core. All the gates and connections of this circuit are tested during the working phases.

A new power/gain invariant is proposed as a high-frequency figure of merit for linear active 2-ports. Using this figure of merit, it is feasible to design amplifiers with potentially unstable devices which have power gains comparable in magnitude to Mason's U function and are optimum in the sense of maximising the 2-port added power.

A novel means of implementing an analogue-to-digital conversion function by charge-transfer techniques is described. The number of metered charge packets that is required to fill a potential ‘well’ to a predetermined threshold level is linearly proportional to the magnitude of the input analogue voltage. Circuits have been implemented using p-channel, aluminium-gate technology, and have demonstrated 10–12 bits resolution capability.

A 4-stage balanced GaAs m.e.s.f.e.t. amplifier has been developed for the 7.9–8.4 GHz satellite-communication frequency band. Linear gain of 26±0.5dB and 150 mW power at 1 dB compression were obtained across the design band. The small-signal gain, phase linearity, group delay and noise figure are described as a function of frequency. Large-signal gain saturation, 3rd-order intermodulation distortion, gain and phase against temperature and a.m.-to-p.m. conversion data are also presented.

A method is described for generating random log-normal vectors with the desired correlation matrix and specified parameters. Such vectors may represent samples of correlated clutter signal. The properties of an inclined form of a planar log-periodic antenna are described. The planar antenna has radiation characteristics similar to those of a halfwavelength dipole, but with a bandwidth as large as desired. It is shown that, when the planar antenna is inclined about one axis of symmetry, the resulting structure has unidirectional radiation patterns.

Sampling-oscilloscope-type circuitry has been interfaced with an s.e.m., which allows the resolution of fast voltage wave-forms on devices up to gigahertz repetition frequencies. The sampling is performed by 100 ps-wide beam pulses, at a maximum sampling rate of 1 MHz. Voltage contrast linearisation has a resolution of 100 mV at an average current of 10−11 A for a 12.5 kV beam and a settling time of 30 ms.

Minority hole lifetimes as high as 2.5 μs have been reproducibly obtained in epitaxial GaP layers grown by an isothermal liquid-phase technique. In this material, the measured lifetimes are shown to be controlled by the dislocation density ρD in the samples when ρD > 5 × 104 cm−2. A theory is presented which shows that, when the lifetime is dislocation limited, its value is close to a minimum possible value for recombination at the dislocation cores.

A method is described for computing the vector sum of any number of bipolar input signals, using 4-quadrant multipliers in a difference-of-squares configuration. Accuracies of better than ± 0.1% have been measured.

A computer procedure to determine the initial potential distribution in the vicinity of semiconductor junction structures is outlined. It is useful for either n+−n or p−n structures and has the advantage that the mesh spacing is generated in such a way that its use for modelling under nonequilibrium conditions satisfies the stability requirements outlined by Seidman and Choo.

A new formula for the autocovariances of the output from a nonlinear system in terms of the input autocorrelations and the nonlinearity has been derived. Extracting the modulus output for a complex signal convolved with a complex chirp impulse response requires four real filters at baseband plus components for summing, differencing, squaring and square rooting. Modulating the signal onto a carrier allows the equivalent processing to be performed to a good approximation by a single i.f. filter.

A Bode- or Nichols-diagram plotter with a new type of rectifying and filtering system is proposed. From the performance point of view, this system can be compared with a standard-type plotter operating with a ‘self-adapting’ time constant. The advantage of the design is that a high-speed detection is no longer dependent on the filtering time constant. A quadratic sweeping waveform optimises the plotter display time.
