Analysis of an acoustically coupled 2-resonator surface-wave filter through impedance transformations provides numerical results for frequency splitting and suggests an equivalent circuit. The frequency splitting is very nearly exponentially dependent on the number of elements in the coupling array.

Criteria are developed for the design of a very general error-feedback circuit whose purpose is to eliminate the presence of nonlinear phenomena, caused by the occurrence of adder overflows, in the forced response of a 2nd-order recursive digital filter.

A processor using a baseband c.c.d. data store and an i.f. s.a.w. chirp filter is shown to offer a realistic alternative to optical or digital s.l.a.r. processing. Range sorting and pulse averaging can be done within the store while the complex correlation for many range cells can be accomplished using a single s.a.w. filter.

A new design parameter for the Lerner filter is described which allows the designer to place a resonance at any frequency outside the passband. The resonance is quite sharp and it appears to be useful in eliminating a narrow band of undesired signal frequencies or in increasing the steepness of the skirt response.

Consideration is given to the switching model of arc root initiation on oxide-coated cold cathodes, in the light of recent site emission lifetime measurements of Guile et al. From the estimates of the total switching times, it is suggested that the switching model is consistent with the lifetime measurements, strengthening the data presented in a previous publication.

A technique for improving the performance of a low-frequency correlator whose design is centred on a bucket-brigade delay line is presented. The technique is based on a concept which uses the unprocessed output of the delay line.

The problem of online computation of linear equations and matrix inversion using digital-stochastic-computing structures is considered. Such techniques are shown to provide very economical and fast online computations. The simple logic circuits used for the realisation of the stochastic operators are ideally suited for large-scale integrated-circuit fabricatioo. Experimental results are presented for the computation nf linear equations and matrix inversion.

A new type of electro-optic channel-waveguide modulator/switch for integrated optics has been proposed and demonstrated in which the transverse confinement of The guided optical wave in a channel waveguide is controlled and the optical energy is selectively fed to either Y-junction output port by control of the applied electric field. The device exhibited 75% modulation depth for an applied voltage swing of 6 V peak to peak and a potential bandwidth of 10 GHz.

The effect of electron-electron interactions on the ionisation rate is investigated. It is shown that this effect may be a power and efficiency saturation phenomenon for GaAs IMPATT diodes. This effect may become drastic if too high current densities are used, and this particularly may be the case in the millimetric frequency range.

The program is for analysing radiation from antenna arrays of arbitrarily oriented thin-wire antennas over the plane surface of an imperfectly conducting earth. The solution is that obtained from the E-field integral equation by the method of moments. The effects of the imperfectly conducting earth are accounted for exactly by using the Sommerfeld formulation.

Selenium-ion-implanted GaAs f.e.t.s have given minimum noise figures as low as 3·4 dB and maximum available gains of at least 10 dB at 10 GHz. The devices do not appear to suffer from short-term drift problems, and have greater device-characteristic uniformity and reproducibility than epitaxial f.e.t.s.

It is shown that the previously established polarisation degeneracy for propagation round a bent optical fibre obtains only in the limit of equality of core and cladding permittivities. Unequal permittivities produce differential attenuations in the components parallel to and perpendicular to the plane of the bend.

A magnetostatic delay line enabling nondispersive delay to be obtained over any 150 MHz bandwidth from S- up to X-band is described. The magnitude of the nondispersive delay is approximately independent of magnetic field, and the device does not suffer from low power saturation effects.

An efficient algorithm is described for simulating the effects of multiple faults in linear active circuits. The process is also applicable to the multiparameter large-change sensitivity analysis of linear circuits. A sequential algorithm based on a stack, and applicable to the problem of recovering digital data after degradation by intersymbol interference and additive noise, is described. Results are presented showing a tradeoff between performance and equipment complexity, with performance asymptotic to the maximum-likelihood-sequence (Viterbi) estimate when the storage is large.

By invoking a fixed-point theorem of functional analysis. Freeman has developed a stability criterion for linear multivariable systems. The criterion is derived by using an operator perturbation technique to try to ensure that the operator in the transformed system equation is a contraction. It is clearly desirable to be able to choose the perturbation operator so that the transformed open-loop operator is as small as possible in some sense. In the letter, we determine that perturbation operator, from the class of diagonal linear operators, that gives the smallest contraction for the transformed open-loop system operator.

The capacitance/voltage characteristics of the metal-oxide-semiconductor system formed on n-type GaAs by anodic oxidation differ greatly from those of p-type GaAs, showing an marked anomalous frequency dispersion which is not caused by the Quast carrier diffusion mechanism, but by an anomalous formation of interface states.

An improved new method is developed which allows the determination, with great accuracy of the resonance frequencies of dielectric resonators. By introducing appropriate approximation for field distribution, two coupled eigenvalue equations are derived, which have been solved by a numerical method. A method is presented for the synthesis of RC 1-ports with a minimum possible number of capacitors, all of equal value and all connected to a common terminal of the 1-port. Optical waveguiding has been demonstrated in planar Structures fabricated with long-chain organic molecules deposited by the Langmuir-film technique. Precise control of refractive index and film thickness was achieved. Attenuation losses are reported.

A procedure for subspace stacking is proposed, and it is proved that the technique is equally successful for both linear codes and anticodes. It is demonstrated that families of errorcorrecting codes may be constructed using the proposed technique for stacking linear codes. Examples of such codes are given with rates better than the best known codes of identical Hamming distance and the same number of information digits.

It is shown that current transport through Schottky barriers formed by Pd on n-type silicon with a thin thermally grown oxide is sensitive to hydrogen in the ambient. It is shown that a transition from minority- to majority-carrier dominated current occurs with increasing hydrogen pressure.
