An in situ In etch technique is described for l.p.e. growth of InP. This method eliminates substrate ‘sensitivity’ to orientation difficulties and removes any need for melt supersaturation to obtain good morphology. In addition, in situ etching removes any substrate pitting or type conversion which degrades actual device performance.

It is shown that the synthesis of closed-loop linear multivariable discrete-time systems can be directly effected by performing equivalence transformations on appropriate polynomial matrices. These polynomial matrices are the Smith canonical forms of the closed-loop characteristic matrices of such systems subject to the constraints imposed by the fundamental theorem of linear state-variable feedback.

Laser emission in InSb resonantly pumped by a TE CO laser was observed, and the magnetic tuning characteristic was investigated for the samples with different carrier densities. The tuning range of about 8 meV (65 cm−1) was obtained for magnetic fields of up to about 20 kG.

A derivation based on ray tracing and the local plane-wave approximation is used to show the behaviour of waveguide modes in a linearly tapered multimode fibre having a step-index profile. The azimuthal mode order l is invariant through the taper, and, for suitably designed tapers, the changes in the radial mode order m and the lateral component u are negligible. A formula for designing such tapers is presented.

A modification to earlier work is presented which allows for finite strip thickness in the calculation of microstrip impedance and line wavelength. It shows a considerable improvement in accuracy and scope over some earlier work which included strip thickness, but remains simple in form. Expressions are presented which allow calculation of Z and λg for any microstrip geometry and relative permittivity.

The feasibility of replacing the fabricated metallised foam subreflector in dielguides by the shaped dielectric surface has been demonstrated. The design of the shaped surface is based on the principles of geometrical optics. Out of the many curvatures obtained, two shaped surfaces result in a conical main reflector for one case and a conical subreflector for the second case.

The design of an a.v.c. is a simple application of control theory. The main problem in realising an integrable wideband a.v.c. is the amplitude detector. An implementation of Pythagoras's law acts magnificently in a slow a.v.c. However, in a fast a.v.c., offset will cause some 2nd-harmonic distortion.
