The reproduction and the storage of synthetic images on a smectic liquid-crystal display is described. The ‘write’ is obtained by an infrared laser beam. A spatial modulation of the cell transmission is obtained with a variable alternating voltage applied to the cell. A high-resolution display with high contrast and continuous gray scale was realised.

The letter reports the development of a fast-response bulk photoconductor that can be used as a photodetector and as an optically gated switch. The photoconducting material used is semi-insulating, chromium-doped GaAs, a sample of which is mounted in a 50Ω stripline holder. An estimated detector transition time of 92 ps or less was obtained from tests made with a mode-locked dye laser.

Further explanation of the continuous transformation pattern plotted on the real AD-BC plane and set up in a previous letter is given. A new network is introduced, called the antiorthogonal network and is related to the orthogonal network.

To avoid skewing in the amplitude distributions of pseudo-noise obtained by subjecting long m sequences to analogue first-order low-pass filtering it is necessary to choose the m sequence to match the filter time constant. This letter shows how this can be achieved.

Various specifications for general-purpose logic packages for random-logic design use have been previously proposed. Current research interests in more powerful logic design techniques, however, are suggesting newer s.s.i. integrated-circuit packages for future use, and newer and more compact subsystems within future m.s.i./l.s.i. logic packages.

Previous calculations of the velocity/field characterisitcs of electrons in indium phosphide at room temperature have been extended to cover the temperature range 200–500 K. Preliminary results for the diffusion coefficients are presented.

The subthreshold electron-drift-velocity/field characteristic for epitaxial InP has been measured over the temperature range 118–446 K. The threshold field of H-shaped devices is found to increase from 8 to 12.3 kV/cm and the peak velocity to decrease monotonically from 3.3×107 to 1.9×107 cm/s over this temperature interval.

Lowpass filters with no finite zeros and a monotonic magnitude response are discussed. A characteristic function is derived by maximising the mean-square error in the stopband. Analytically, it has been proved that H filters are the most selective of all other filters with monotonic magnitude response.

The characteristics of magnetostatic surface waves (m.s.s.w.) propagating in a layered structure consisting of metal plates, dielectrics, a semiconductor and a y.i.g. slab are given. The dispersion relation of the system is derived under the condition of magnetostatic approximation. From the results of computer solution for the dispersion equation, we conclude that a growing m.s.s.w. occurs only when the carrier drift velocity is greater than phase velocity of the m.s.s.w. Also, the influence on the amplifier of a gap between the semiconductor and the y.i.g. slab is discussed.

The crosspolarisation performance of reflector antennas fed by a low-crosspolarisation composite feed is investigated experimentally. It is found that an improvement of slightly better than 9 dB can be obtained with this feed, compared with the single-dipole feed. This confirms previously published theoretical findings.

If an injection laser is biased above threshold and modulated with a small signal with an angular frequency ωs, the modulation sensitivity at ωs can be increased if an additional large pumping current with an angular frequency ωp > ωs is applied.

A set of digital filters, each admitting at least a 2 : 1 change in signal sampling rate, is presented. At high rates, the filters require no multiplication or storage, and a sequence of them is simpler than one filter performing code conversion in a single step. Combined with a 1-word buffer, the filters can convert a code to any desired sampling rate.

A small active folded dipole used for reception between 300 and 1400 MHz is presented. The output impedance is matched by a transistor and the folded-dipole radiation impedance is determined to allow good sensitivity to the reception of weak signals.
