A method of contact-bonding lenses to fibre endfaces is outlined. The lenses are of the same diameter as the fibre. Contact bonding reduces the adjustment effort compared with that required for independent lenses. Measurements performed on fibres with contact-bonding lenses using a GaAs laser diode as a light source showed a clear increase in coupling efficiency for the launching of light into the fibre.

The effect of field fringing at microstrip impedance steps is shown to be representable by a Section of lossy microstrip transmission line. The experimental solution for the step-model parameters is described. Specific results are presented for much used 0-0635 cm-thick alumina substrates.

It is shown that when a plane transverse magnetic surface wave is incident on an infinitely long elliptic cylinder, the axis of the ellipse being parallel to the magnetic field, there is no reflected surface wave when the ellipticity of the cylinder is correctly chosen.

Measurements using a composite primary feed with parasitic auxiliary elements reveal that both the copolar and crosspolar performances of this feed are better than those of the similar feed employing derived elements. An improvement of 10 dB in the crosspolar peak over that of the single dipole feed was obtained. An increase in antenna gain of about 3.3 dB was measured with a 3 dB suppression in sidelobe level.

To limit distortion in digital cable systems due to low-frequency cuts, it has been usual either to use quantised feedback or use a code with a finite digital-sum variation. It is shown that these restrictions are unnecessarily stringent. Systems typically use 3-level codes, and some codes requiring less bandwidih than the 4B3T type are analysed.

Boron and neon damage implants were used in fabricating integrated-circuit resistors in silicon. Resistor properties were studied as functions of damaging ion species and dose. Sheet resistances in the 10000 Ω/□ range were obtained with low temperature and voltage sensitivities and good d.c. isolation.

Computation schemata represent the flow of data and control during a parallel computing process. The letter introduces the concept of inhibit branches to the control schema and shows how they may be used to ensure determinacy under simultaneous operating conditions. The letter proposes a technique for the fast determination at extremely low frequencies of the capacitance and leakage components of capacitors. The proposed method permits the measurement of C and G in only a few cycles. An apparatus is described employing this technique for the automatic measurement of m.o.s. capacitance as a function of frequency and bias voltage.

The principle of photoluminescence (p.l.) intensity modulation is demonstrated with near-bandgap p.l. of n GaAs bulk material. The p.l. is modulated by a semitransparent schottky barrier. Preliminary experimental results show the feasibility of fast p.l. pulse modulation (at 1 Mbit/s) and the applicability of this principle to optical signal transmission.

The near-field and the far-field patterns from the high-gain S band antenna an the METEOSAT are calculated by the geometrical theory of diffraction. The far field is transformed into the near field through an expansion in spherical harmonics. The resulting transformed field agrees well with the g.t.d. near field.

A digital-filter design technique is described which employs simple trigonometric windowing of a ‘host’ digital filter. In contrast to the usual windowing rationale which uses a truncated ideal impulse response, this approach uses an optimal (finite-length-minimax) host impulse response. It is shown that optimal Hilbert-transform filters serve as suitable hosts for lowpass filters of even-length impulse response, and optimal differentiators can be used as hosts for odd-length impulse responses. The resulting windowed filters are no longer optimal, but yield approximation errors under most operating conditions.

Further new results regarding stability of the original model designed using reduced-order models are derived. The new stability conditions given are independent of how the reduced-order models are obtained, and the results could be adapted to any general multivariable frequency design methods.

A 3-terminal device containing an amorphous chalcogenide semiconductor is described. It is shown that, with the application of relatively low voltage pulses of appropriate polarity to a control electrode, switching of the device can be initiated or prevented.

The temperature coefficient of the breakdown voltage of a Zener (voltage-reference) diode has become accepted as an implicit function of the breakdown voltage. The letter describes a simple technique whereby the temperature coefficient may be independently controlled by altering the doping profile. To illustrate the technique, design criteria for a silicon diode with a breakdown voltage of 20 V and a nominally zero temperature coefficient are derived.
